Honest post alert. Today, I had a student call me a “queer” and “fag.” The other teachers seemed very alarmed at the language and in hindsight it seemed to roll off my back as if nothing had happened. I work with truly amazing people who are nothing but the best. And what I realized in that moment is that I hear and see this type of hate spoken and written each and every day so I have become numb to it. I’m glad that I have stopped allowing it to affect me because people who spew hate have no control over me. I’m saddened because I’m used to hearing or reading it—online in every comment thread on the internet, in the hallways of our school, used cavalierly as if those types of words are not loaded with hate and as if they aren’t doing damage. Every moment is a teachable moment. And in this one, I am urging and pleading for any teacher reading my words to stop this type of hate filled words dead in their tracks. Stop it from ever being allowed to be written or spoken in your classrooms and in your spheres of influence. Stop the hate filled words and even the seemingly innocuous “that’s gay” that children seem to use to describe anything and everything. This is me letting my students and every person out there know who I will be standing up for no matter how many times I need to stand up for them. There's now a clinical trial underway at the University of Pennsylvania using CRISPR for cancer treatment. • It involves removing immune system cells from patients, genetically modifying them in the lab and infusing the modified cells back into the body. • The hope is the modified cells will target and destroy cancer cells. No information has been released about how well it might be working. The study was approved to eventually treat 18 patients. • Beyond the cancer study, researchers in Europe, the United States and Canada are launching at least half a dozen carefully designed studies aimed at using CRISPR to treat a variety of diseases. Hello everyone! These little bird-like things are cladocerans that I just recorded. They are tiny freshwater crustacean cousins of shrimps and lobsters. They stuck in between filamentous algae Spirogyra but I promise I washed them back to the sample jar, where they can swim around happily and eat my precious algae. . These little guys have two light-sensitive organs in the head, a larger compound eye and a smaller one is something called an "ocellus". Can you see them? . They are extremely common in any freshwater environments, especially in shallow, weedy parts of ponds. I don't collect them on purpose because they increase in numbers quickly and eat everything in my cultures but I often bring thousands of them home with me. Mi casa es tu casa, right!? . Some single-celled organisms attach themselves on them time to time, in this way they can both enjoy a free scenic route in the most beautiful part of the pond and get some more opportunities to eat. . Watch ⬆️ a spinach leaf that has been transformed into beating human heart tissue. Scientists used the plant to replicate the way blood moves through human tissue. They hope that one day this method can be used to better filter blood to damaged tissue in human hearts ➡️The scaffold is made from a jelly-like hydrogel material developed by UW bioengineering doctoral student Lauran Madden. A needle is used to implant the tiny (third of a millimeter wide by 4 millimeters long) scaffold rods into the heart muscle ➡️WHAT IS THE HEART MADE OF? The heart consists mostly of cardiac muscle, a special type of muscle that contracts rhythmically of its own accord. A tough membranous bag, called the pericardium, surrounds the heart, and a smooth membrane, called the endocardium, lines the inner surface. Hello everyone! This is a Phacus (possibly a Phacus orbicularis) and it's a tiny unicellular dancer! Look how it swims and rotates! . Phacus is my favorite genus of green little things, their shape and size changes from species to species and I made a video of then some time ago which shows how beautiful these cells can get! Please go to YouTube and type "Some of the Most Beautiful Cells on Earth" and you will see I was right with the catchy title! . Phacus has chloroplasts and it uses them to produce sugar from sunlight like the plants that you see everyday! It has a whip-like structure called a flagellum and Phacus beats it to swim in the water. Also, it has a red eyespot on the cell, can you see it? It is used for detection of the sunlight so the tiny dancer can swim where it's brighter to make more sugar via photosynthesis. . Big round thing in the cell is a paramylon grain. Paramylon is a starch like main reserve substance, this cell has couple of other small paramylon grains too, but the big one is quite striking. .
