T h e • u n e x p e c t e d ____________________ I had planned to post a different photo today, from my epic Muhabura hike. But life as a travel photographer is nothing if not full of surprises. I did hike Muhabura - one of the Virunga volcanoes, 4127 meters high - but it rained so heavily that I couldn’t even get my cameras out. (Full disclosure: I decided to turn back just before we reached 4000m as there wasn’t much point in continuing. The entire way down was one long, steep mudslide.) So another gorilla photo it is! This time a dominant silverback with one of his children - probably. While the dominant silverback is the official father of all his family’s youngsters, the other silverbacks (there were a total of three in this particular group) do their best to enjoy some jiggy-jiggy, as my guide put it, with the females when the big boss isn’t looking. The best work-life balance is one which is unnecessary because work never feels like work - just life! @jessi_mali constantly inspires me to be more present and mindful, to make each moment count - no matter what you happen to be doing. I’m far from perfect, but I’m enjoying the practice. I’m currently reading Sam Harris’ Wake Up, a fascinating book about spirituality (specifically the benefits of training your mind through meditation) without religion. T h o u g h t f u l ____________________ I’ve been doing a lot of interesting reading (and listening - thank you, audiobooks!) lately, on everything from the cognitive revolution and human evolution to rethinking how most people structure their lives and the importance of mindfulness and meditation. Tomorrow I will - hopefully - catch a train from Addis Ababa to Djibouti (via a 2-day stop in Harar). I like trains: the landscape is ever-changing, there are lots of opportunities to meet people with interesting stories, and there is plenty of time for reflection. With warnings from the railway company about the train getting stuck for hours, tomorrow might very well turn into a very long day. So plenty of time indeed. A c t i v e • v o l c a n o ____________________ Have you ever been to an active volcano? Last time I was in Ethiopia, back in 2016, this was one of the highlights: Erta Ale, a mesmerizing volcano in the Danakil Depression. While not as big as Congo’s Nyiragongo - also mesmerizing - Erta Ale is special because it’s possible to get so close, walking across the petrified lava of earlier eruptions (those three lights are the head torches of my friends and our guide). Now, however, it appears that the volcano is becoming increasingly dormant - according to a friend of mine whose tour company sends groups to Danakil on a regular basis, all you have been able to see for some time now is smoke. This area has been in dire need of proper management for some time - it’s littered with plastic bottles, toilet paper and human refuse, and in all fairness being able to walk right up to the edge of a spluttering lava lake probably isn’t ideal - so maybe a temporary drop in tourism can create some breathing room and become a catalyst for positive change.
