Guess who’s back in the USA?!? Michelle had a great time on her trip. We are excited she’s back and looking forward to the spring fling @nostalgiahollow this Saturday from 11-5pm. We just restocked, and you can get one of our Shimmering Seas
wood wick candles. We also have a few pearl necklaces left like Michelle is wearing. See you Saturday!! #supportyourfriends #handmadehome #localvendors #vendormall

My oh my, how things change! When my family and I bought our property 3 years ago, we made a plan to work towards producing 75%+ of our own food. But after a while, the rose-colored glasses fade and you realize that you are not lucky enough to say that homesteading/farming is your only full time job. My husband works 60+ hours a week and I work about 40. Between that and other obligations, and unless I want to get a whole 90 minutes of sleep each night, it is just not in the cards right now. So after some soul searching, we have decided to shift gears. We are fortunate enough to raise our own beef, chicken, eggs, vegetables, and some fruit. But for the foreseeable future, we are going to attempt to eat 90% LOCAL. Yes, we’re taking a que from Barbara Kingsolver and her book “Animal. Vegetable. Miracle.,” which as I mentioned recently is a spring reading tradition of mine (This last reading was inspiration and a form of “OK… here we go!”). This all starts April 6. I’ve spent weeks researching local places aaaand I'm feeling pretty ready to go. I’m excited. I’m nervous. I need a beer. Luckily, there’s a lot of places I can get a local one of those as well
Kind consumption means buying locally sourced fruits and veggies.

Buy local. Buy local. Buy local. Chances are we’ve heard this a lot in recent years, but do we actually know WHY it’s so important?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You might be like me and think, first, of the obvious benefits: supporting your neighbors and local economy and having peace of mind knowing precisely where your food comes from.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But buying local ALSO serves up the sweetest slice of kindness to the planet, too. 1. It reduces all of that nasty plastic packaging that overflows most supermarkets—and landfills. (#CrushPlastic) 2. Local farmers who get more moolah by marketing their goodies locally probably won’t be as tempted to sell their abundant green space to developers. (10 points for GREENffindor!!) And 3. It likely cuts food miles in half (or more!), consuming less energy and reducing CO2 emissions.

While visiting Maine this weekend, we stopped at Spiller Farm in Wells and got to pick our own squash, corn, kale, beets and, of course, PUMPKINS! On the menu for dinner tonight: stuffed butternut squash
