FREEZING TRACKS IN LOGIC PRO X . We all know how annoying it is to have your playback stop and get those pesky ‘System Overload’ messages. Besides increasing your I/O buffer size and changing the multithreading option in LPX, there are other things you can do: 1. Go to ‘Tracks’ menu and choose ‘Configure Track Header’ 2. In the pop-up window, tick the box that says ‘Freeze’ 3. Click on the snowflake looking icon on each of your tracks. This will bounce the track to audio so as to keep Logic from processing all the effects in that track every time you hit play. Note that this only works on individual tracks, not on busses. 4. On each track’s ’Track Settings’ menu, you can choose between 2 freeze modes: 'Pre-Fader' freezes whatever virtual instrument you’re using AND all the effects on the track. 'Source Only' freezes only your virtual instrument. None of these freeze modes freezes your volume fader or sends . That’s it! BASIC DRUM BUS MIX . Happy Friday! To finish off the week, we’re showing you how to finish off your drums! One you’re individual drum & percussion tracks are mixed, you should process them together in your Drum Bus to add that final flavor they might be missing. To do this: 1. Add Overdrive to your Drum Bus. This gels everything together a bit and adds a bit of harmonics, bringing out the little details in your drums. Make sure to gain match so you can A/B correctly! 2. Add Channel EQ: This great, transparent EQ is perfect for getting rid of whatever unwanted low end mud and harshness the Overdrive may have brought up. 3. Add Glue Compression to further gel your drums and give them additional punch. You can find our tutorial for Glue Compression on our first ever tip video! 4. Add yet ANOTHER compressor. Find this preset in Compressor Tools > Type R Pumping. This may sound like overkill, but this one has totally different settings from the Glue compressor, and is meant to be mixed in at only 5%-15% wet. Great for further enhancing the energy and details in your Drum Bus. 5. Finish it off with the Vintage Graphic EQ. This excellent EQ is great for full range instruments like Drums. Go over the top with each band to hear what it does to the sound, then dial it back to taste. In this example I’m adding some low end on the kick and some air & brightness to bring out the cymbals and other percussion parts. .
