Ever leave your guitar leaning against the couch and wake up to this sight on your hardwood floor? Peghead breaks can be dramatic in appearance, but with a little effort they can be repaired with fantastic results. • • The “better” breaks are when the peghead is still attached to the neck and hasn’t broken through the face veneer, but not all have such luck. The real challenge in repairing these types of breaks is when there are crossgrain fractures that leave little endgrain daggers pointed at each other, inhibiting a tight “joint”. • • In this video I’m carefully removing the endgrain daggers that will not be seen from the exterior to help get the two pieces to marry back together well. Endgrain to endgrain is a terrible glue joint so I am not concerned about the removal these little portions of wood creating a poor reglue, especially considering how much surface area we have in face grain. But obviously the goal in restoration is to be as minimally invasive as possible so it’s a slow process. This one minute clip was boiled down from close to two hours of removing a little and checking the fit, over and over.
