Oh my beautiful boy, what can I say? From a life of dogfighting, to coming minutes away from being euthanized at the age of 9, to kicking cancer's ass this year at the age of 13. ° ° Joey came into my life when I was emotionally falling apart almost 6 years ago. I was dealing with something very serious and I was struggling to keep my head above water. I was angry at the whole world, and I couldn't wrap my head around the hand that I was dealt. This led to me sinking into a pretty deep depression. Things as of lately have become difficult again for me, yet I'm now armed with the many lessons that he has & continues to teach. When Joe came along, he helped me to realize that we don't choose our fate; but instead it chooses us. Everything happens for a reason, even if it takes us a lifetime to learn what that reason is. He inspires me on a daily basis with his strength and continues to save me, every single day. He taught me that hate will eat away at your heart, until there's nothing left. He taught me that forgiveness doesn't change the past, but it does bring peace and enlarge the future. Joey continues to teach me that every day is a second chance. He taught me to live in the moment, never to hold grudges, to accept myself and more over to love unconditionally. He taught me that in my weakest moments, I am still strong. Lastly...he taught me that what matters most is not the first, but the last chapter of our life; which shows how well we ran the race. We so misunderstand fear, lovely one. We dread the sensations in our body that can accompany it, and we call those sensations fear. And so fear becomes tarnished, misinterpreted. We will do anything not to experience those sensations.⠀ ⠀ See, when we run from the feeling we call fear, THAT'S what causes those sensations. It's the running, not the arrival. Read that again. Fully take it in. It isn't fear that causes those sensations you dread so much to overwhelm your body. What cranks those sensations up is that you run away from the sensations instead of seeing them simply as information inviting action.⠀ ⠀ Let's think about feelings in general. Let's explore how different people view them. ⠀ ⠀ Some of us have learned, because we've had positive experiences as a child of having help to understand and soothe and be informed by feelings that arise, that feelings are our emotional GPS, vital to our ability to know what's going on.⠀ ⠀ Others of us, who have been left alone and unaided with our feelings, have come to experience them as unwelcome, often frightening, sensations in our body that we don't know how to control.⠀ ⠀ So maybe we could rethink this reaction? ⠀ ⠀ So, just as the empty pang in our stomach tells us we're hungry, so the sudden squeezing sensation in our chest tells us we're frightened. Both are an invitation to make a choice, take a decision, act. If we ignore them, they will increase. However, if we take notice and let them inform us, they will die down and disappear.⠀ ⠀ The sensation of fear is meant to be received as valuable information, exactly as a hunger pang is. And acted on.⠀ ⠀ Let go of the fear of fear, brave soul. Lean in and welcome what it has to offer. We can spend years doing it, lovely one. We fill our head with so much nonsense, so many pointless, empty thoughts, we allow ourselves to become so constantly preoccupied that it becomes established as our way of being. We don't realise, because we don't give ourself space to reflect, or even notice, that we are becoming ever more separated from who we are. We don't touch base with ourselves, we don't check in on ourself. We become a stranger just going through the motions. Why are you running so hard, gentle soul? What is it that you're afraid you'll feel? What are you going to discover that's so terrible? What would happen if you just sat with yourself a while? See, who you are exists right in the depths of you. In the quiet, the stillness. And that inner being that you are holds such calm, such wisdom, such power to support and guide. The only reason you fear silence is because either it feels empty, lonely. Or because you fear what it might reveal. But hey, how about we think about this differently? Suppose you try to remember that this inner being, this 'you', has always been with you. Before you were born, it already knew you. Everything you have lived, it has witnessed and shared. Every experience, every fear, every joy, every hope. Your inner being knows you like no other, and possesses a strength born out of the growth that comes from every single moment of surviving and evolving you have shared.
