In April, 36-year-old #KiaPatterson made history when she took over ownership of #GroceryOutlet in #Compton—making it the first black-owned grocery store in the city. The Compton native, who told an interviewer that her family works at the store with her, aims to bring quality food at low-cost price points to the community. In a video posted to Facebook that has since gone viral, Patterson said she was able to take over the store because of her extensive experience in the industry. After years of working at Smart & Final, she was actually recruited by Grocery Outlet to help with their #LA-area expansion. The L.A. Sentinel reports that Patterson began training with the company in June 2016, and after gathering her investments and setting up a business plan she took ownership of the store on April 1, 2017. Grocery Outlet is a San Francisco-based company with more than 250 locations in #California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Pennsylvania. According to the company's website, each store is independently owned and operated by local individuals like Patterson, who make the day to day decisions of the business. “I made the decision to own a Grocery Outlet so that I could have the freedom to be able to do what I want to do and not be pigeon-holed to anything,” Patterson told the Sentinel. “Now I have the ability to set my own destiny.” “I’m not one of those owners that dictates things. "Apart from the pension fund, which needs to be strengthened for the demands on it in 15 or 20 years, the Holy See is paying its way, while possessing substantial assets and investments. "In fact, we have discovered that the situation is much healthier than it seemed, because some hundreds of millions of euros were tucked away in particular sectional accounts and did not appear on the balance sheet." So exactly how much is the Vatican worth? It's hard to say. The Catholic Church has a history of opacity about its finances, something Pell says is slowly changing. The suspect in the road rage shooting death of former NFL star #JoeMcKnight has been named. #NOLA reports that 54-year-old white male #RonaldGasser was taken into custody at the scene of McKnight’s shooting in #Terrytown, five miles southeast of #NewOrleans, on December 1. McKnight was 28 years old. He was unarmed at the time of his death. Witnesses reported that EMTs tried to perform life-saving techniques on McKnight at the scene to no avail. NOLA reports that a female witness said she saw McKnight “trying to apologize” to another man after some sort of traffic accident. The witness says that the gunman then shot McKnight once, stood over him and said, “I told you not to f**k with me,” and fired another shot into the former NFL star. While Fox New Orleans reports, citing witnesses, that McKnight was “pulled from” his Audi by the suspect prior to the shooting. The New Orleans Advocatequotes a witness saying that she heard four shots in total. According to his LinkedIn page, Ronald Gasser was educated at the Naval Air Technical Training Center. The page also says that Gasser has been the owner of LAN-TEL, a telecommunications consultancy business, since January 1996. Gasser is also listed as the owner of Go Live Installs, a plumbing company. Online obits show that his mother, Virginia, died in May 2000. However, for some escaped slaves in #SouthAmerica, braids were a survival #mechanism and led to #freedom. Slaves may have been prevented from reading, writing, and communicating with one another; however, because we are a #crafty people we found another way to #communicate and find liberation. #SanBasiliodePalenque is a #village in #Northern #Colombia that was founded by #BenkosBiho. It is believed to be the first freed slave city of the Americas. According to multiple sources, Benkos was a #king in #Africa who was sold into slavery. He would be sold several more times before escaping to start this village that in turn, would serve as refuge and safety for other escaped slaves. Today, the village has about 3,500 inhabitants and is the only city founded by escaped slaves, that is still standing in Colombia. Most of the population are Afro-Colombians, with African heritage that can be traced back to the slave trade. Benkos Biho was pretty much the #HarrietTubman of South America. Not only did he found San Basilio de Palenque and then develop a #language for the village, but according to the Bearded Gringo, a travel blog, “Benkos Biho also formed an #army and an #intelligencenetwork to help organize the escape of other slaves and to guide them to #liberated areas.” He then took his intelligence network and stealth to the next level by utilizing #women and capitalizing on the fact they were not often checked upon and allowed to wander more freely than men, to his advantage. While the women slaves were “wandering,” in fact, they were mapping out escape routes, the Bearded Gringo reports. Writing (if they even possessed that skill) or drawing out the map could lead to them being discovered and then most likely sold again, or killed out of anger from their master. How could they move and plan covertly with minimal risk of being discovered? The women would weave the maps in their hair, carving out paths with their cornrows. Is #Homeschooling Best for #Moor Families? An increasing number of #African-American #families say traditional schools have failed them. African-American #parents done waiting for public schools to get better. The numbers of black parents choosing to home-school their children has doubled in a little over a decade – about 220,000 black school-aged children are being homeschooled – up from estimates of 103,000 in 2003, according to the National Home Research Institute (NHERI). In a 2012 report published in the Journal of Black Studies, Mazama surveyed black homeschooling families from around the country and found that most chose to educate their children at home at least in part to avoid school-related racism. Mazama calls this rationale “racial protectionism” and said it is a response to the inability of schools to meet the needs of black students. “We have all heard that the American education system is not the best and is falling behind in terms of international standards,” she said. “But this is compounded for black children, who are treated as though they are not as intelligent and cannot perform as well, and therefore the standards for them should be lower.” Schools also rob Black children of the opportunity to learn about their own culture because of a “Euro-centric” world-history curriculum. “Typically, the curriculum begins African American history with slavery and ends it with the Civil Rights Movement,” she said. “You have to listen to yourself simply being talked about as a descendent of slaves, which is not empowering. There is more to African history than that.” Mazama’s studies show that black parents who choose to homeschool often teach a comprehensive view of African history by incorporating more detailed descriptions of ancient African civilizations and accounts of successful African people throughout history.
