At 211 Cooper St.... patent medical manufacturer, George G. Green did what any sensible Victorian businessman would do to show he arrived financially in the business community.... build a mansion; and what a manse he would build! Completed in 1876, in the fashionable Second Empire style, George’s palatial mansard would be called “Gray Towers”. After losing interest with the medical industry, in 1872 Green returned to his hometown in Woodbury to help his father Lewis, run his growing business, manufacturing a medical formula for treating dyspepsia (indigestion). Lewis had also developed a successful cough syrup. Both formulas main ingredient was laudanum. Laudanum, a tincture of opium, was the Victorians favorite drug!
George proved to be a brilliant businessman, and by marketing nationally, he made his father & himself multi-millionaires. But they were also a financial boon to the town as well, employing 600 people & building parks, an opera house, & country club for the town among other things.
On an 8 acre parcel next to the family’s business, George built his 3 story manse of blue gray stone. The acreage was landscaped in a park like settling, with fountains, gazebos, a huge conservatory, and a carriage house that looked like a mansion in itself. On one side of the property, a creek was dammed to create a lake for boating.
In 1925, George would die in his beloved mansion. His widow would follow in 1934. Remaining empty, the heirs would finally sell the house to St. Patrick’s Parish for a parochial grade school in 1943. The mansion was grossly remodeled by removing the mansard’s 3rd story & the two towers; a flat roof was installed. In 1968 the house was completely lost to a fire. The carriage house still exists and is part of the current schools campus. Please swipe to see other photos of #lostmansion...also of1880’s carriage house, floor plans, interior library, George & family outside his manse. #mansard #mansardmonday #secondempire #secondempirearchitecture #victorian #victorianhouse #victorianarchitecture #victorianstyle #archi_ologie #archilovers #archilove #theamericanhome #housestalker #houseaddict #oldhouselove #brickstory
Guess where this is!? Wrong! It’s in Brookline, MA. It was built in 1893 in Chicago as the exhibition space for the World’s Fair where it served as the Dutch Cocoa House. It is a near replica of the Franeker City Hall in the Netherlands. Charles Brooks Appleton of Brookline saw the building and purchased it. It was moved brick-by-brick and rebuilt in Brookline. Now I wonder if this Appleton has any relation to William Sumner Appleton who founded @historicnewengland. .

Turns out that if you leave Rochester, the sun magically comes out. My afternoon workday basically consisted of driving around and looking at historic places in Avon and Naples. Some days it's good to be a preservationist .

One thing I like about SF is all of the historic architecture. This house in particular caught my eye during a recent walk on Divisadero in the Lower Haight. Just had to share it! It turns out to be SF landmark # 190, the Charles Hinkel House. MANSARD MONDAY⠀
The Elbridge G. Keith house at 1900 S. Prairie Avenue is one of just seven surviving houses on the “sunny street that held the sifted few” – Chicago’s most exclusive residential street in the late 19th century. The imposing three-story limestone clad house with slate mansard roof is the last surviving example of the Second Empire style which dominated the Prairie Avenue streetscape. ⠀
⠀
The house was built in 1870-1871 for Elbridge Gerry Keith, one of three Keith brothers to reside on Prairie Avenue. Keith was born on July 16, 1840 in Barre, Vermont, and was named in honor of Elbridge Gerry, who served as vice-president under President James Madison. He was descended from James Keith, a Scotch Presbyterian clergyman who came to America about 1650, settling in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He grew up on the family farm, and after clerking in a general store in Barre, came to Chicago in 1857, joining his brothers Edson and Osborne, and working in the business selling hats and caps. ⠀
⠀
In 1868, Keith purchased a double lot on Prairie Avenue for $10,750 and engaged John W. Roberts to design his new home. Roberts began his career in the office of the prominent American architect Richard Upjohn before coming to Chicago, and designed numerous large residences in the city. In the 1880s the house was significantly enlarged with the addition of the third floor mansard roof, and an addition to the rear. ⠀
⠀
Keith died at his home on May 17, 1905 and was interred in a large plot at Graceland Cemetery. He left an estate valued at $980,000. Bequests were made to a number of charities including the Moody Bible Institute, the Chicago Visiting Nurses’ Association, the Chicago Old People’s Home, Beloit College, the American Sunday School Union, and the Chicago Home for the Friendless. ⠀
