Saturday is my day to run errands. It’s been sunny (bad for pics cuz shadows) or rainy (bad for everything) the past 4 Saturdays, so here is a picture of a home in Louisville I saw on March 24th. It’s one of my favorite homes in the Old Louisville neighborhood. It’s in the 1400 block of S. Fourth Street. Swipe left to see 3 pics. I have to work tomorrow, but at 4pm there is a get together of the Benjamin Marshall Society at Hotel Julien. The hotel is located at 168 N. Michigan Ave., and they are having free cake for Benjamin Marshall’s 145th birthday. So, if you want that cake, cake, cake, show up. Or don’t. Looking east down Bingham Street toward the intersection with S. 10th Street on Monday, June 7, 1915. The date for the photograph is June 7 but I believe it should be June 17, since that was the day the Oliver Bath House was dedicated. The namesake Henry W. Oliver (1840-1904) made his fortune in the iron and steel business. He started off small, manufacturing nuts and bolts and grew into one of the largest manufacturers of bar iron, before incorporating his company under the name Oliver Iron and Steel Company. Today his name lives on in his donation of the Oliver Bath House and the construction of the Henry W. Oliver Building downtown on Smithfield Street, both of which were constructed after his death. The city is very lucky to still have one active bath house. The other public bath houses that once served the communities of Lawrenceville, Strip District, South Oakland, and the former Allegheny City have since closed and some have even been demolished. When we moved here we had certain ideas for our future and the future of the house. The first open house we had came about when we started a Facebook page for the manor. We got bombarded with people in the community wondering about the possibility of tours. At this point we had been in our home for 5 months and had already experienced constant visits from strangers that had been in awe of the house for years. We thought, why not give it a go? That first weekend of May 2015, over 3,000 people toured Duncan Manor. At that point we knew this house was more than just us. August W. Wattigny and Johanna Shay married in 1884 at Mater Dolorosa Church. Wattigny was raised on a farm in nearby Jefferson Parish and Johanna was raised on the land where they built this Fern street home in 1893. Her father was an Irish saloon keeper who owned several lots on the block and sold this one to his daughter in 1892 for 200 dollars. Wattigny was Captain of Fire Engine No 19 had been with the NOFD since it's founding in 1892. They had five children before Johanna passed away in 1899 and August moved with his two youngest children to a rental on Leonidas street by 1909. The youngest daughter Victoria was the first wife of legendary and controversial New Orleans musician Nick Larocca, leader of the Original Dixeland Jazz Band.

This raised cottage is interesting! Its not quite a shotgun cottage. (Single shotguns typically have one door and one window in the front, and doubles have two doors and two windows.) With two windows and a door, it is reminiscent of a side hall townhouse, but it is not two stories tall. Hmmm. This is the servant staircase that gets you from the 2nd floor back hall to the attic. It brings back memories of our first year in the house when the entire thing was in this state. It's a good reminder of how far we have come, but it will be nice when there are fewer reminders. They did some interesting things when building homes 150 years ago. Does anyone know why they would have built the staircase in front of the window?
