Last I read in the newspaper when restoration is complete it might be a little rental residence! The office was built around 1870 and is 627 sq feet. Good morning to everyone, except the person next door who started hammering at 8am.

Last year I posted the home of Beverly Davenport, located at 302 E. Henry in quaint Saline. Now, here is Daddy Davenport's (William H. Davenport) monumental Second Empire mansion at 300 East Michigan Avenue, built in 1875. The carriage houses aren't too shabby either. The senior Davenport (1826 - 1909) rose from store clerk to one of Saline's most prominent businessmen, dealing in mercantile, banking and other arenas. He was also a devoted member of the community, instrumental in Saline getting a railroad as well as a fire department, after a fire destroyed a portion of town. Mr. Davenport commissioned William Scott of Detroit to design the impressive home shown here. It was built at a cost of approximately $8500. William Scott was the father of John & Arthur Scott, prominent architects in their own right, responsible for the landmark Wayne County Building as well as many fine residences in and around Detroit. Mr. Davenport and his wife, Zylpha, traveled to Philadelphia for the 1876 Centennial Exposition, purchasing many of the furnishings for their home. In 1881, the Davenports had their residence connected to Mr. Davenport's downtown store via telephone, making them the first in Saline to take advantage of the still relatively new technology in this manner. The mansion remained in the Davenport family until 1930, when Beverly Davenport passed away. It was inherited by Carl Curtiss, a family friend who worked for Citizens Bank.
