“New Hampshire red marans” Had some new marans project chicks hatch over the weekend! I got five out of a dozen eggs (one had webbed feet so I gave it away). A friend of mine who I consider my mentor gave me some of his eggs to hatch and continue the project! The final phenotype of these marans will resemble a New Hampshire red! I have another dozen about to hatch in a week, can’t wait to see how they look as they mature .

A pair of black copper marans I’m keeping my eye on this season. Out of a couple dozen cockerels only 2 made it to this point (and the other guy is questionable still). Breeding can be a pain sometimes, tons of feed, time, and energy goes into raising a flock, just for a handful (if that) to make it into the breeding program. I have to say, I am happy with how these marans are turning out this season. They’re still young, but I’m hoping for some nice dark chocolate eggs out of them

We are very happy with their production (color and quantity) demeanor/personalities and their ability to withstand the heat and cold of NJ. We have learned a lot over the past couple of years and owe a great deal of thanks to our wonderful chicken community! Anyone who keeps Marans will tell you that everything gets stuck to their shells......straw, shavings, feathers, you name it. The reason is that Marans color their egg shells differently than other brown laying chickens. Marans apply their pigment to the cuticle (or outermost surface) of the egg. Other brown layers apply theirs to the palisade layer of the shell (which is the outer shell but below the cuticle). This also explains why Marans pigment can be scrubbed off but other brown pigments can’t be.
