There’s a beach I’ve always wanted to go too: Woody Bay Setting off from the Hunters Inn (following the Carriageway path) the signs would have you believe it’s only 2 and 3 quarter miles (the signs are wrong) It’s 3 miles to the zig-zag track to the beach, and then over a mile before you reach the beach itself. The hike is difficult in places, but mesmerisingly beautiful (as is the walk home) I have literally seen few things more magical, and the first glimpse of the beach itself is really something, especially as it’s completely hidden by trees until you’re actually there. A truly hidden beauty. We arrived at high tide and watched the sea retreat, to reveal the beautiful beach (complete with Victorian Tidal Pool) The history of the place is intriguing, from the Colonel who went bankrupt trying to develop the area, to the waterfall, remains of the pier, Limekiln and other stone structures, to the mesmerising beauty of the place. A very pretty little church up on the north coast right near Exmoor, with a beach nearby that needs walking to so is usually quite empty. Dark stone too, kind of remembering all the mining around here. “Late C13/early C14 chancel and possibly some of the fabric of the tower and nave. Part of north wall of nave rebuilt in late Cl7. Vestry 1851. Restored 1866-7 by S. S. Teulon when north aisle was added and south porch rebuilt.
