#c2e2 Day 2! I finally met Jennifer Hale (@jhalestory )! It was an absolute honor, Mass Effect and Commander Shepard had a huge impact on my life and I’m just so grateful to have had the opportunity to show her my armor and my appreciation! . We spent a lot of time dancing at the DJ stand which was super fun, especially when the kids would get out there and show off their moves. . I also kinda commandeered the My Hero Academia meet-up? As “Commander” Shepard it seemed appropriate! I’m a liiiiitle bit bummed I didn’t wear deku to the meet up, but in the end I think it was better that I was a neutral party. Long post incoming! We wanted to share some learnings we had while dyeing the visor. We opted to dye the vacuum formed visor because we couldn’t get our hands on a container that could fit a 30x40cm plastic slab Dyeing plastic is pretty straight forward, but it’s still tricky. Things to consider are: - What kind of plastic are you using? - At what temp will the plastic get soft? - How intense should the color be? - What kind of polyester dyes are available to you? Our setup was: 2mm PE-LD, ours got soft at around 70°C and we used iDye Poly for the dye bath. Obviously, we recommend testing the dye on some scraps before you go in with the whole thing. You can see our test results on the second picture (we used 1,5l of water and 1 pack of dye, which was too much color and we think that's why it resulted in stains on some test pieces). Seeing the different hues that we achieved, it got pretty apparent that our visor might not get such an intense color as we had to work with temps below 70°C or we’d risk deformations. The third picture shows a phenomenon we experienced with the cooler temps (~65°C): If you let the scrap in your dye bath for longer, the dye will start to seep in at the edges. This results in a gradient (that can also be patchy/uneven) Our final dye bath was in a bucket with 8-9l of water and two packs of dye. I used the dipping technique to tint the visor. This ensures that the plastic wouldn’t get too warm at a time and it keeps it in motion and should avoid staining. It took 20min of dipping to get this color. Some more tips: - Do not use any utensils you want to use for cooking afterwards! - Don’t use metal objects to stir if your piece is in the container (could result in scratches) - Find a container that’s big enough, so your piece won’t touch the ground/sides (could result in more stains/dented parts) - Get yourself a thermometer to measure the water temp - Clean your piece with some rubbing alcohol prior to dyeing Thanks @xtcharlyn @elenyafrost @_tsuya_ and @fantasy.forge for all your helpful suggestions and tips We’re really happy with the visor and can’t wait to show you the finished helmet by the end of this week!

BECAUSE IT IS MASS EFFECT 3 BDAY, i mean what better day to post this fanpic and such love. I absolutely love @biowarebase for saving my life (quite literally) with this game and for guiding me into what i wanted to study and research (Bioinformatics). My life is so much better because of this franchise and i just can’t express it enough. I have had some rough patches in my life, but nothing quite measure up to the 9 months where my grandma, cat and two bestfriends all died. Within 9 months i had lost my only two best friends, my first own pet and my dear grandmother. I remember my best friend and i crying in our other best friend’s funeral just 8.5 months before i lost my grandma. Same night my cat goes missing and less than three weeks after my best friend dies too. I very likely wouldnt be here today if i could not bury my sorrow within this game franchise because i have no idea how i would have dealt with all this grief without it. I was already a troubled young adult at this time and i just didn’t know how to function anymore. Mass Effect was there for me when i needed it the most. No other game would occupy my mind enough to get me through the day. This suddenly became a lot more personal than i intended, but well. Now you know my life wasnt always ‘perfect’.
