Breaking news on #medicalmandates in #NewYork: (WTNH) - "A ban on unvaccinated children from public places in New York is overturned. Last month -- #RocklandCounty put the ban in place to try to contain an ongoing #outbreak. A New York State Judge reversed it on Friday. He also ruled that unvaccinated children are free to go to schools and public places for now. The ruling was part of a lawsuit brought by parents. They argued the ban overstepped the county's legal authority. Rockland county officials say around 170 people have contracted #measles over the past seven months." In the early 1960s (before the measles vaccine was introduced), about 4,000,000 children got measles each year & it was considered a benign childhood illness as 99.9% of children fully recovered (0.01% died, or about 400). Thus, the risk of dying from measles was 1/10,000, or about the same chance as being struck by lightning once in your lifetime. By comparison, currently over 23,000 infant deaths occur every year in the U.S. due to all causes combined, & the chance of a U.S. child dying in the first year of life is 1 in 170 (0.6%)—this is 60 times the risk of a child dying from measles in 1962, a time period when almost every child had measles by age 15. The simulation reveals that in the prevaccine era, approximately 10.6% of the population was susceptible to measles, most of whom were children less than 10 years of age. ——— With the institution of the measles immunization program, the proportion of susceptibles in the population fell to 3.1% from 1978 through 1981, but then began to rise by approximately 0.1% per year to reach about 10.9% in the year 2050. The susceptibles at this time were distributed evenly throughout all age groups. The model did not consider the potential effect of waning immunity. ——— The results of this study suggest that measles elimination in the United States has been achieved by an effective immunization program aimed at young susceptibles combined with a highly, naturally immunized adult population. ——— However, despite short-term success in eliminating the disease, long-range projections demonstrate that the proportion of susceptibles in the year 2050 may be greater than in the prevaccine era. Why are we still talking about measles ▫️In 2000, measles was declared eliminated from the US secondary to the very effective MMR vaccine. ▫️Unfortunately, we are seeing a major resurgence of this highly contagious and potentially devastating virus secondary to misinformation that has lead people to not vaccinate. ▫️If you are having doubts about the MMR vaccine here are some facts: Measles is more than a rash. 1/4 people will require hospitalization. 1-2 out of 1000 people will die despite the best care. The MMR vaccine does NOT cause autism. This has been proven over and over, most recently with one of the largest studies to date. The study included 657,461 children in Denmark. Researchers found absolutely no overall increased risk for autism among those who received the MMR vaccine when compared with those who had not. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to get vaccinated as well as encourage your family to do the same. If you choose not to get vaccinated remember the risk that you place on those who are unable to get the vaccine (pregnant women, anyone on immunosuppressive therapy, HIV patients with severe immunosuppression, anyone with leukemia or lymphoma, or patients with congenital immunosuppressive disorders). If you choose not to get vaccinated you put yourself at risk but also place these populations at high risk of getting infected when their immune systems are already less able to fight disease processes.
