Renowned Chinese American architect I.M. Pei has passed away on 15 May 2019. . . Pei was 102 years old and lived an amazingly prolific life as an architect. He was known to be extremely sensitive to the sites upon which he built and here in Singapore, I.M. Pei built three (four if you include Suntec City which he worked on with @tsaomckown and @dparchitects) buildings which I will share today. The last building of his that I will share is probably also his purest in form. Completed in 1990, this is The Gateway, a pair of buildings which bear more than a passing resemblance to his other mega project completed about the same time - the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong. The Gateway is such an amazing building that up till today, people who have never seen it in person still refuse to believe it is actually three dimensional. . . R.I.P. I.M. I took a two and a half week break away from @jewelchangiairport because I was there almost every day during the preview and opening days but there was one phenomenon that I really wanted to photograph that I couldn't do during the preview days because of the timing. . . At 0900hrs every morning, if the sky is clear, there will be a stream of sunlight coming through the dome towards the HSBC Rain Vortex causing a scattering of rays thanks to the mist churned up by the cascading water. This lasts for about an hour till 1000hrs and if the weather remains good, it repeats again in the afternoon from the opposite direction at 1600hrs. . . I had already managed to catch the afternoon version of this and really wanted to do the morning one (where there would be less of a crowd as well) and I finally shot a series of images on the Monday that just past. . . Jewel Changi Airport is a project by @capitaland and @changiairport and designed by @safdiearchitects . The HSBC Rain Vortex is jointly designed by @wet.design and Safdie Architects. Sometimes you have to hop some fences and explain yourself to security to get the shot. The security guards at this abandoned nuclear power plant weren’t happy with me launching my drone. At all. But when I hopped the fence across the street, launched, shot and landed completely outside of their “no trespassing” zone, they gave me the thumbs up and drove away. ‍♀️‍♀️ Then - I whistled the theme song to “The Simpsons” and got myself lost in a state forest.
