Walking in dead man’s shoes...or should we say slippers...or sandals, even. What do you do with the clothes and objects from your dead loved ones? My mum left my dad’s slippers (this photo) in my hallway for her to wear when she came to the house to visit. At the time I thought - “how morbid”. But as the weeks passed I kept looking at them and then found myself wearing them a lot (when she wasn’t around) and feeling close to him as I did so. Likewise, when my aunt died I was given her umbrella from her items. I’d left it on my office desk when I took it to work. One of the young men in my office remarked what a great umbrella it was because the handle also contained a torch. I hadn’t even noticed that before. I had to smile at that, because it was so my aunt Bessie. She had always been into gadgets. Bringing back value to the items from our deceased loved ones seems remarkably therapeutic. And sometimes we need others to guide us through our grief, even if they do so inadvertently. The hardest thing we have to go through in life is losing a loved one. We have lots of memory items which can bring comfort, including items to remember those babies lost during pregnancy, at or soon after birth and in infancy.
