Lost railway walks – Meon Valley Trail Also used by horses and consequently rather muddy at times, the Meon Valley Trail from West Meon to Wickham is a long-lost railway walk through beautiful Hampshire countryside. Built to accommodate double-track, the railway from Alton to Fareham was opened by the London & South Western Railway in 1903 but the hoped-for traffic between London, Gosport and Stokes Bay never materialized. It remained a sleepy railway backwater until closure to passengers in 1955. The line featured grand Mock-Tudor ‘Arts & Crafts’ style stations (of which East Tisted, Privett and Droxford have been lovingly restored as private residences), two tunnels (Privett and West Meon) and a 62-ft-high steel viaduct (now demolished) at West Meon. The Meon Valley Line’s claim to fame came during World War 2 when Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower met secretly in a special train parked at Droxford station to finalise the D-Day landings.
