As we are constantly affixed to striving for perfection and things anew, we tend to neglect and appreciate nuances of the worn, imperfection and impermanence. I worked on a private commission for a very special couple, Darren & Sharon. There was no brief for this commission — it was an open brief for me to interpret the artwork in any form, and they were adamant to not view the work-in-progress. I had never worked on any project as liberating as this. I truly appreciate their trust, yet at the same time it was a nerve wrecking experience wondering if they would like the concept and paintings! After several exchanges of interviews with the couple, I really admired their chemistry and bond. With that in mind, I decided to create a series of paintings, each painting telling a part of their adventure. The creative process was kept rather organic as there was no set parameters. I had no idea the number and the exact sizes of each painting, and just went on painting whenever I had inspiration. An Effort Most Futile, 2008 "Although I am very concerned about the Environment and truly wish to help and be part of a solution, I feel it is really not simple and not as easy done as commonly advocated. Pollution and the Destruction of our Environment occurs on such a very large scale, that rescuing it is really beyond me as an individual. In my collaboration with Melissa Shoes @melissashoessg, I conceptualised a series of artefacts in the spirit of Wabi-sabi, capturing ephemeral moments that we hastily overlook. With the soap artworks, I collected used and expired soaps and recreated them into soap sculptures playing on the different pastel shades, textures and forms.
