Artist unknown // Coral reefs occupy less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they are home to more than a quarter of ALL marine organisms. These delicate ecosystems provide food and other resources for over 500 million people in more than 100 countries around the world. They offer shoreline protection and even new medicine for cancer patients. However, 25% of the world’s reefs have already been destroyed. At current rates, 90% will be at risk by 2030. Nearly all be will lost by 2050. Global warming causes coral bleaching (expulsion of algae from coral tissue which causes the coral to turn white) must be curbed. Coral reefs need 10-15 years to recover from bleaching episodes. With the increasing frequency of bleaching events, most reefs may never recover. Scientists have found that plastics also cause diseases in corals. They project that 15.7 BILLION pieces of plastic can pollute coral reefs by 2025. Everyone knows the stories that the networks confuse dolphins, seals, sea turtles and other animals. This phenomenon was called "Ghost fishing". Basically it drowns and kills animals. More and more fishermen from developing countries are now using plastic nets (for their low cost and high durability). But a lost or abandoned on the network can continue "fishing" on their own within a few months or years. Any marine life can be endangered by plastic, but sea turtles seem particularly susceptible. They are not only entangled fishing nets, but also often swallow plastic bags, taking them for jellyfish (his main victim).
