Gut Health & Marathon Training ♀️ .
.
My training starts in about two weeks and it’s SO important to me that I train and eat mindfully through the process. So here’s my approach to this next few months: .
.
1. Take time to make sure my parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is being activated properly by taking time to “belly breathe” throughout the day. Your PNS is responsible for your “rest and digest” response - we often live in our “fight or flight” or mode because we are fueled by stress, caffeine and adrenaline. Without a healthy PNS response, things like digestion, rest, and skin health get ignored by the body
.
.
2. Eat properly! I’m really not about that protein bar life Most protein bars and powders are FULL of fake sugars and ingredients that don’t make the protein gains worth it in my opinion. I’ll be making some delicious HIGH-PROTEIN treats that my gut loves
.
.
3. Be mindful. About how my body feels and how my body & mind are reacting to the increased KM’s.
.
.
4. SMILE. Whenever I run I always look like I’m having the worst possible time! My goal is to really enjoy and embrace this time & be thankful for what my body can do This will probably be much easier now that I can train in my new fig kit from @esjay_sports
.
.
Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk, bye
Crazy busy lives and extreme mental activity overtaxes the nervous system.
Mental, emotional, and physical stress and over-stimulation, resulting in a challenged or weak nervous system, is a common condition in our technological / social media driven society.
The nervous system consists of 3️⃣ parts: Central Nervous System (sensation & motor control), Peripheral Nervous System (connects nerves to organs and limbs) and Autonomic Nervous System (emergency response: Sympathetic- “gas pedal” & Parasympathetic- “break pedal”).
-
We can use breath techniques paired with movements to stimulate, soothe and strengthen our nervous systems just like we would work out our muscles at a gym.
EXAMPLE: Breath of Fire
1️⃣ Arms up to 60 degrees, fingers tucked into the pads of your palms and thumbs engaged.
2️⃣ Breathe in and out powerfully through the nose only.
Pull your abdomen/naval IN on the EXHALE, press it OUT during the INHALE.
3️⃣ Start to shorten each breath and pick up the pace.
The breathing should be rapid, rhythmic and continuous - with no breaks.
4️⃣ Try to equalize the inhale and the exhale in both strength and length. Although it’s EQUAL part in the beginning I focused on the *exhale* because the inhale comes automatically.
The goal is to relax into the breath letting it feel automatic. TRY IT ✨ and feel your energy shift!
Years ago I used to really struggle with holding my arms up for even 3 minutes of breathing (would not be smiling like above photo!) but with practice I promise it’s doable AND feels sooo good!
To strengthen your nervous system = building your CAPACITY to function in this world, experiencing reality with ease no matter the situation.

Here's a video of the diaphragm in action!
I wish it showed the attachment of the diaphragm to the heart and how the heart moves when we breathe**.... but it is the best I could find on instagram and it’s fun to watch. This Video is from @doctordconline .
There are some fun animations on YouTube from 3D-yoga which show the diaphragm moving alone...
let me know if you have questions and I’ll try to answer them. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll try to find it out for you.
.
** BTW —how the heart moves when we breathe it’s one of the coolest things I ever learned from @intelligent_body and #thefranklinmethod .

“Breath is the bridge which connects life to consciousness, which unites your body to your thoughts. Whenever your mind becomes scattered, use your breath as the means to take hold of your mind again.l
Brian Swan and Ive been training together 3 times a week learning Muay Thai. After each class our trainer Nico Verresen walks us through a deep relaxation breathe meditation.
While falling deeper into relaxation he connected our hands, and our breath. A profound sense of love and interconnectedness arises between us almost instantaneously.
We feel so enlivened when we're exchanging our breath and prana (life force energy) in such close contact.
And perhaps most importantly, our breathing practice creates a ripple effect that lasts for days.
We're more in sync with each other, and our actions are imbued with love and mutual understanding.
Whether I’m longing to connect more deeply with a loved one or shift our energy after a quarrel, something tells me that these breathing exercises have the potential to deepen a variety of personal relationships.
I can't help but wonder about the positive impact we all could have on the world if we cultivated a sense of oneness with each other by breathing together like this regularly.
I highly recommend hypnotic breathing, especially if you work with your spouse in business. ❤️

Do you find yourself wanting to run screaming for the hills at certain times in your life? If so, try out this breathing technique for "dealing with life". Use it when unexpected stresses come up and you need some centering.

.
❤Adapted from a great little book "Breath Perception" by Barbara Kipfer.❤
.
.

2. Make a fist with right hand, wrap left hand around right, press heels of palms together and extend thumbs up
3. Focus on thumbs as you breathe in for 5 seconds, out for 5 seconds then hold for 10 seconds.
4. Try to work up to 30 cycles or 10 minutes of this breathing. Start by aiming for 2 to 3 minutes.

Are we getting excited yet for #yogisofthrones upcoming #yogachallenge ? Oh how I cannot wait to see everyone’s creative pictures. When somebody says #chairyoga it doesn’t sound as exciting as #throneyoga . I have taught and done chair yoga before and it’s a great prop to make yoga accessible to all people. I am pretty sure that people that are stuck in office chair have have #sidebodystretch Or #twist at their desk, so that is chair yoga too. Physical yoga can be done anywhere. But mostly to make #yoga and #mindfulness a part of your #lifestyle is important. #mindfulbreathing #meditation #beinthemoment .
.
Have you done or taught chair yoga before? .

For those of us that have anxiety or stress, try this. It’s a little love note for ourselves.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Let. It. Go.
