Ranging as high as 77.5% lead content, Cerussite is the master of misconception holding heavy weight and ranging only 3 to 3.75 on the Mohs hardness scale. Cerussite received its unique name from the Latin word cerussa, meaning “white lead”. Creussa nativa was mentioned as far back as 1565 by a renowned physician and naturalist named Conrad Gessner. Since then examples from this location can be found in prominent books like “Namibia: Minerals and Localities”(varies volumes), “Icons” and “The Smale collection-Beauty in natural crystals”. Cerussite is famed for forming some of the most interesting, complex, and varied crystals/groupings found in the mineral kingdom. Our piece comes in a highly coveted form of reticulated growths of thin crystals which in best cases form the delicate, snowflake-like mass seen above. This piece sits perfectly symmetrical and balanced on its center matrix causing an almost unrealistic mirroring on both sides with an outstanding level of transparency to match. Boasting the size of a grown mans hand this snowflake demands the attention of any display it sits in.
