I did strict keto for a year. I’m so glad I did. I am SUPER fat-adapted. I can fast like a boss. I can run and train deep into a fast. I’m never hangry, I can easily switch into ketosis. It is so liberating - ultimate food freedom. But check out what happened to my body composition just going from keto to low carb. Look at my DNA testing- 2 different tests, both telling me I won’t do well on a diet high in (especially saturated) fat. Look at my cholesterol levels- that was deep into my keto phase. Now. This is not the case for many, many people. I can’t even tell you how many people get improved numbers on all these things on keto. Better cholesterol, better body composition, all of it. But I’m sharing for awareness that you don’t have to force it if you’ve been keto for a while and you’re not getting the results others are getting. This is why I made my Keto In & Out Program: Last year at KetoCon I felt like the universe was telling me something. I had just dropped like 7% body fat solely by shifting into low carb instead of keto, when 3 different women approached me for help with the exact same story: “I keep gaining weight on keto no matter what I do.” When I asked if they had tried carbs, they all looked at me like deer in headlights. I was like ok... I’ve got to teach people how to get OFF keto now. As much as I love keto and the dozens of incredible benefits, you don’t have to force it. You don’t have to do it FOREVER. Did you know that ketones may improve the mitochondrial function of muscle cells . Due to the long-known benefits of ketosis for epilepsy, most research exploring the clinical applications of ketones is related to its effects on the brain. However, researchers are expanding their interests on how ketones affect the rest of the body, including the skeletal muscle. In a 2018 publication, researchers looked into how ketones affect the mitochondrial function of muscle cells. What they found was that the ketone body, beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), improved mitochondrial function in these cell types. Specifically, the scientists observed that BHB increased mitochondrial respiration without altering ATP production, all while hydrogen peroxide was produced in significantly lower amounts. Hydrogen peroxide is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can promote oxidative stress and impair muscle function. Given that mitochondria are responsible for producing the bulk of our cellular energy, and that exercise is an energy demanding task, optimizing the function of these small but mighty organelles is of great interest for improving athletic performance.
