Moby Dick, una de las obras maestras de la literatura universal, está inspirada en una ballena albina que frecuentaba las costas de Chile a principios del siglo 19. A dicho animal se le conocía como ”Mocha Dick“, llamado así por la isla chilena Mocha, y fue sumamente célebre en su tiempo.⁣ ⁣ Esto se debe a que en la mitología del pueblo Lafkenche (mapuches de la costa) una ballena blanca llamada ”Tempulcahue“ era la guardiana sobrenatural de las costas. Esta creencia exacerbó la sorpresa de los balleneros norteamericanos al ver un monumental cachalote cerca de Mocha. La mágica mezcla de mito y realidad llevó a que en 1827 saliera un reportaje acerca de Mocha Dick en la influyente revista neoyorquina ”Knickerbocker“.⁣ ⁣ Dicho escrito sirvió de base a Hermann Melville para escribir su opera magna en 1851. Ya era ampliamente conocida la historia del hundimiento del bote ballenero Essex por medio de una ballena blanca (presuntamente Mocha Dick), y Melville partió de la realidad para escribir una de las más memorables obras literarias anglosajonas. That encounter was profound and so peaceful. I had many encounters with curious sperm whales but this time was on an other level. This individual was motionless at the surface, didn’t move or changed its body language while I was approaching. When we made eye contact I could see trust and respect...that was exactly what I could feel as well. How can we explain that the largest predator that ever lived on the face of the planet invites you to share such a moment? I believe I have some of the answers. After a few minutes being a few centimetres away from each other the sperm whale exhaled a bit more, started to sink slowly a few meters deep, rolled to look at us while disappearing slowly.
