According to certain commentators Anthony Burgess was not to be trusted. They disagree about the veracity of his claim that, in 1959, a doctor gave him a year to live and diagnosed an inoperable brain tumour. The author had used this to explain his prolific output at this period, during which he wrote 6 novels apparently with the aim of providing financial security for his wife. The prognosis was obviously incorrect anyway and he went on writing for two more decades. The disturbing dystopian novella ‘A Clockwork Orange’ was published at the end of this heightened spell, in 1962. The author referred to it as a ‘jeu d’esprit’, which took him only three weeks to write, but its impact has been momentous, especially following Stanley Kubrick’s film version of 1971. It is frequently listed among the finest twentieth century novels in the English language. Burgess, born a Catholic, explores the theme of free will. Alex and his group of sociopathic teen friends, the droogs, engage in acts of random extreme violence and converse in a Russian-inspired slang called Nadsat (which incidentally is derived from the Russian for teen). After attacks amounting to rape and murder Alex is apprehended and sentenced to life in prison. There psychologists submit him to experimental, but ultimately successful, aversion therapies to quell his violent tendencies, despite the chaplain arguing the state is robbing him of free will. Regarded as no longer a threat and released into the community, Alex becomes ‘victim’ and attempts suicide. The controversial conditioning called Ludovico’s Technique is reversed and, in the 21st chapter (significantly the age of maturity), which was not included in U.S. editions, our anti-hero finds himself less stimulated by a life of orgiastic crime and contemplates turning his life around, and maybe even starting a family. U.S. publishers, to the author’s dismay, rejected the tentative ‘happy ever after’ outcome and insisted on a pessimistic conclusion as being the only credible one. The filmmaker Kubrick, therefore, was not even aware of the alternative until well into the screenplay and, unsurprisingly, was not really attracted by it.

Currently Reading Well this is one popular book here on Instagram. I have been intrigued by this book since it came out. Needless to say, when I received it for my birthday in January it moved pretty high up my tbr pile. So far I can completely see why people love this one. The characters are I have been consumed by their lives and their thoughts, when I'm not reading this book I'm thinking about it. I can't wait to have time to power through the rest of it (who invented this work thing, it's really getting in the way of my reading life ). Have you read this book? Это не случается с одним человеком. Каждого посещает хотя бы одна трагедия. Разбросать на всех героев – получается не так уж и много. ⠀ ▪️Но главное, автор не делает из них реальных трагедий. Она просто повествует. С грустинкой, но в тоже время с позитивом. ⠀ Сару обвиняют в обилие персонажей-геев. Брат Элли и его парень. Их тётя. Старый йог. ⠀ Но поменялось ли ваше впечатление о прочитанном от того, что я приписала эти строки? ⠀ Стала ли книга менее трогательной, доброй и тёплой? ⠀ ▪️Лично я, читая, даже не обратила внимание. Seven novels by Eco ➡️ What comes to your mind when you hear "SEVEN BOOKS"? Personally, I don't only think of the #HarryPotter series. What I think of, with increasing pain, is that #UmbertoEco wrote only seven novels. On the other hand - seven whole big books (not equally big, but I will let it go)!!!!! I have read only five of them, but not chronologically, as I meant at first. Each of them was an intellectual pleasure and a breathtaking adventure. If you are still in doubt - just grab any of them asap. Because, judging by my own experience, you are likely to want to reread them, and life is short! Eco managed to write seven novels in his life (beside other numerous things). Will you be able to read them or have you already? О чем вы думаете, когда слышите "СЕМЬ КНИГ"? Мне, как ни странно, приходит в голову не только #ГарриПоттер Со сжимающимся сердцем я думаю о том, что #УмбертоЭко за свою жизнь написал только 7 романов. С другой стороны - целых 7 больших прекрасных романов, из которых два мне еще только предстоит прочитать. Потом можно (и очень нужно) будет перечитывать. И перечитывать... Lately I have read several non-fiction books (+1 very thick novel) on linguistics and literature, and all of them offer a very wide range of follow-ups: books and researches I want to read. This is one of the ways for me to find out about books of quality and selecting my next reading. #UmbertoEco , #DavidBellos , #PaulAuster , #НораГаль , #ГалинаЮзефович - all of them are on my list of bookish influencers because their books inspire me to broaden my horizons and to read more and wider.
