Ancient Forest Alliance Campaigners and @endangeredecosystemsalliance’s Ken Wu have identified what may very well be one of Canada’s most spectacular old-growth forests on Vancouver Island in Pacheedaht territory near Port Renfrew: the “Mossome Grove.” The awe-inspiring Mossome Grove (short for “Mossy and Awesome” Grove) is extremely unique due to its impressive combination of Sitka spruce trees and huge ancient bigleaf maples with branches draped in hanging mosses and ferns. It also contains several near record-sized trees including a massive bigleaf maple nicknamed the Woolly Giant, which would rank the 9th widest on the BC Big Tree Registry at 2.29 meters (7 feet, 6 inches) in diameter and may have the longest horizontal branch of any tree in British Columbia, measuring 23.1 meters (76 feet) long! Without sufficient policies and legislated protection however, ancient forests like the unique and photogenic Mossome Grove are at risk of being logged. I've found my new favorite national park! Olympic National Park is insanely beautiful (and moss-ome ). These pictures can't do it justice, at all. But hopefully you can get a sense of how amazing our day was! We started off in the Hoh Rainforest where everything was literally dripping with life - lush ferns, misty mountains, moss growing over everything, trickling streams and raging rivers. We saw Coho salmon fighting the current (see the video at the end) and I saw a bobcat for the first time (pic 3)!!! Plus lots of deer and a bald eagle (not shown). The temperate rainforest was everything I dreamed of and more, I am so amazed and happy I was able to hike through it. We also visited Crescent Lake and did the quick hike to Marymere Falls (pics 2-4). I have so many more photos, I'll have to post some to my stories. Here are some more photos from the newly-identified "Mossome Grove" near Port Renfrew, home to prehistoric-looking, shaggy bigleaf maples and towering Sitka spruce trees! It's one of the most beautiful and photogenic forests I've ever seen! It also contains several near record-sized trees, including a massive Sitka spruce that measures over 10 feet wide (hope to have a height measurement soon!). This is the first time we've located an old-growth grove of this combination of giant spruce and maple, as virtually all such old-growth groves have long since been logged and this forest type was never common to begin with in BC (it's best known in the famous ancient rainforests of the Hoh, Queets and Quinault Valleys of the Olympic National Park where millions of tourists come to visit the mossy temperate rainforests). Of 90 primary valleys (the flow directly into the ocean) over 5000 hectares on Vancouver Island, only 4 remain intact. And on the south island in particular, over 96% of the valley bottom forests have already been logged. It’s time for the NPD to protect BC’s biggest trees, grandest groves, and endangered old-growth ecosystems on a larger scale, while shifting to sustainable logging in second-growth forests as an alternative.
