Let’s talk. As shocking as it may seem, I don’t tell you guys EVERYTHING. Part of it is calculated: I have to have some things for myself. But part of it is because I don’t even know how to articulate parts of my experience. But I think I should try. • Lately I’ve been realizing that I have grossly overextended myself. And it wasn’t on purpose - there are just lots of things that I am passionate about and want to be involved in. But I’m very abruptly being introduced to my limitations. That’s been frightening for me. I’ve always felt like I could do anything I wanted given time and the opportunity. But in my chosen path, there are infinite possibilities with a finite amount of time. There’s so much to commit to, participate in, and be involved in. Then I want to make sure I’m doing the best by the kids. Maintaining my marriage. Helping my church grow. Mentoring. Volunteering. Doing well in school. Growing as a scientist. For some reason, I thought that something was wrong if I couldn’t do all of these things. I’ve always done “more.” But what happens when more becomes too much? • You feel like there’s nothing you can drop. You feel like your job is to do things for others. You feel like you don’t matter. So you disappear. • Because when you overcommit, there’s no space for anything else. There’s no space for emergencies (like your landlords wanting to sell your house), or failures (like weeks’ worth of research having to be repeated), or stressors (like Holy Week), or surprises (like your kids desperately needing to see a doctor). But these are the times we learn about ourselves. Like I’m learning that perhaps this is what growth feels like. I haven’t dropped anything... but I’m still moving. The feeling of waiting for the other shoe to drop is slowly dissipating. I thought I knew everything about myself, but it seems like I’m in a season of change.
