Full. I feel full. Just got home from our final dress rehearsal for Shadows of Heaven: The Bronx Blues. I am so grateful for this beautiful experience. To collaborate with other beautiful, brilliant and soul connected creatives to tell such an important story. Never mind that I know the story well because it is based on the life of my friend of almost 20yrs. Or the fact that I grew up in neighborhoods where young black boys constantly had to find their way without their fathers due to the prison system (among other things). Full Transparency: I didn’t grow up with my father either. This story is important on so many levels and for so many reasons. We had to trust each other to tell it. We had to be vulnerable to tell it. We had to share our gifts to tell it. We had to seek to understand to tell it. To work through some of our own “stuff” to tell it. To hold space for each other and all those who will come to see it. PAIN /// Great article on @themightysite on a patient’s perspective of pain. It goes in to the often-used pain scale that is in standard use by healthcare professionals. Someone that is in chronic pain cannot be placed in a box of “0-10”. In this well-worded article "It’s all about how your brain perceives your pain and also your past history and exposure to pain.” We already know that a patient with Stage 1 Endometriosis may have severe pain, when a patient with Stage 4 may report very little pain. Why is this? … ... ... It depends on their History . . . Their previous exposure to pain . . . Their daily stressors . . . Their ability to manage these stressors . . . Their support systems at home . . . All of these and more go in to how we perceive pain, how we can overcome pain, and how our patients are able to pick themselves up and carry through their day. Patients with chronic pain have to pick themselves up, even if they are in 9/10 pain. We must believe them that they are in severe pain. Just because they may not screaming on the outside, does not mean that they are not screaming on the inside. They need our support. They need our guidance.
