MoMA: 'Is The Western Dead?' by Dave Kehr. If you're not aware of them already, let me point you in the direction of Dave Kehr's excellent visual essays on cinema, which pop up now and again on The Museum of Modern Art's YouTube page (along with equally fine essays from other departmental curators on film and other artforms). . . Kehr's essays are especially good on American cinema, and a case in point is his first-class examination of that most typical of American movie inventions, the Western. What the genre means, how it was used and stylised, and whether or not it still has a future in 21st century filmmaking. It's an excellent piece, superbly illustrated and edited, and greatly enhanced by Kehr's softly spoken narration; the man has a great radio voice. We can only show 60 seconds here so do visit The Museum of Modern Art's YouTube page for the whole 15-minute film. You won't be disappointed. . . "At their most profound," says Kehr, "Westerns deal with the intersection of the individual and society. They convey a sense of what is gained and also what is lost by belonging to a community as opposed to living in the wilderness where as an individual you're completely free. It's the arrival of civilisation in the form of those ranchers and farms and small towns that means that the hero is going to have to sacrifice some of that freedom. . . "The classical Western is fundamentally connected with the coming of law, which defines a new society. The central irony of the classical Western is that the law has to be established through exactly the kind of personal force, strength and violence that the law is meant to suppress. So the hero is the perennial outsider who has to use the methods of the outlaw to fight the outlaw." . . What do you think?
