Happy Birthday Sir Paul McCartney Paul McCartney Performing “Blackbird” Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney by far had the most successful solo career, maintaining a constant presence in the British and American charts during the '70s and '80s. In America alone, he had nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career, and in his native United Kingdom, his record was nearly as impressive. McCartney's hot streak began in 1970, when he became the first Beatle to leave the group. A little more than a year after the Beatles' breakup, McCartney formed Wings with his wife Linda and Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, and the group remained active for the next ten years, racking up a string of hit albums, singles, and tours in the meantime. Wings disbanded in 1980 but McCartney stayed near the top of the charts over the next five years, thanks in part to a couple big duets with Michael Jackson. McCartney revived his solo career in 1989 via Flowers in the Dirt and its accompanying international tour, setting a template he would follow into the new millennium, when he'd support his records by playing concerts around the world.

#TheyWontGoWhenIGo harks back in sound to “Look Around”, but in a more extended and encompassing version, with a similarly distinctly classical (the harmonic progression is very similar to Chopin's Etude Opus 10 number 4, measures 5 and 6, although at a much slower pace) feel, its quasi-improvisatory piano part and chilling flute-like T.O.N.T.O. creating its bleak, almost hopeless tone. Stevie's masterful arching vocal delivery above is all what makes the song so moving, increasing in anger and pain towards its middle section with his attack on sinners and corrupt politicians before dropping back to the quiet sadness at the start. The song has taken on its own legend since its release in 1974. The song’s origins date back to a bloody 1973 car accident that left Wonder spiritually altered and in a coma. This composition is his reflection on the incident and his commitment to righteousness, sometimes in spite of others. The message behind “They Won’t Go” could be perceived as callous: Wonder basically brags that he will get to heaven before others, due to their wicked ways. However, one could make the argument that Stevie is merely doing God’s work, chastising the wicked and deceitful around him while uplifting the innocent. A true masterpiece!
