Since the birth of our new baby giraffe, we have had loads of questions asking how giraffes are born! Well... HAPPY WORLD TIGER DAY! ⁠ ⁠ Did you know that tigers are one of the only ‘big cats’ that like water? Tigers have partial webbing between their toes, which makes them very good swimmers. Did you also know that a group of tigers is called a streak, although they are usually solitary animals? ⁠ ⁠ To people of many cultures, the Tiger is a symbol of strength and courage. But if Tigers are so admired, why are they endangered? For many years, the illegal hunting of tigers for use in traditional medicine and loss of their habitat has threatened the remaining wild populations. ⁠ ⁠ Three subspecies of Tiger are now extinct with the remaining five listed as critically endangered. It is estimated that just 100 years ago there were over 10,000 Tigers in the vast forests of Asia; today it is possible that fewer than 500 remain in the wild. For these five subspecies, zoos may be their only hope of survival. ⁠ ⁠ Two of our tigers, Aceh and Ndari are part of a regional breeding program for Sumatran Tigers which only have an estimated population of 350 in the wild. Here at the National Zoo & Aquarium, we also strive to help raise awareness and money to donate to a number of different wildlife charities such as the Wildcats Conservation Alliance that help the tiger populations grow.
