Look at this beauty. Not the flower, the filter! This is the B+W Close-up filter +5 by @bwfilter. In case you ever asked yourself how I shoot my macro pics, well, you are about to find out. Let's start with the basics.⁠ ⁠ Close-up filters, also known as close-up lenses or macro-filters, are secondary lenses used to enable macro photography without having an actual macro lens. Basically, they work like a magnifying glass on the tip of your primary lens, so small objects are optically enlarged. The more dioptre, the larger the object will look. ⁠ ⁠ So why would I use a close-up lens instead of an actual macro lens? First of all, they are way cheaper. The B+W lenses range from around 30-60€, depending on what size your primary lens is, and which dioptre you are looking for. There are even cheaper lenses out there, but I don't recommend them since the quality is plain awful. ⁠A high quality macro lens is a great way to try out macro-photography, or spice up your feed with good quality macro photos, without investing too much money.⁠ ⁠ Another big advantage is that you can use close-up lenses even if you have a kitted lens, like my Leica X Vario has, so when you don't have the option to change the lens. ⁠ ⁠ Also, they are way smaller, which means you have more creative options, without carrying a lot of heavy stuff with you. ⁠ ⁠ Want to know exactly how to use them? An image taken recently from one of my favorite waterfall areas in the PNW (uploading again since IG is being wonky). Thankful to have shared this lush, pristine area with a small workshop group over the past weekend when the nearby mountain remained elusive. They all seemed to feel a deep connection there and spent a solid few hours just taking in everything around us, capturing the beauty. Sometimes when we’re lost in the concrete and steel of the cities that we call home, we lose sight of the absolute beauty and perfection of the natural world. The blood running through our veins serves the same purpose as the green “blood” that runs through the plants and the trees. We step out into the light and take in energy from the sun. The same sun that shines down and nourishes all living things, like the birds flying overhead and the small creatures at our feet. When we stop to realise our connection to the natural world, to the many living, breathing specimens of our planet like the tiny crustacean on the beach or the giant ancient redwood that has aged gracefully in the forest, we begin to feel a sense of purpose...and loved. Allowing yourself to come back to nature, to the pure state of your being before there were lines at grocery stores to stand in or traffic to wait in on the highway...is to feel the calming energy of all that ever was. Nature moves at her own pace, without regard to big meetings that are on schedule or money that needs to be made. When life is off course, or pressures seem too difficult to handle...find a forest or garden to sit in, watch the bees, hummingbirds and butterflies fly from flower to flower, and listen to the birds singing. Walk to the water, feel the pebbles and sand in between your toes. Scoop the water up in your hands and feel how easily and gently it slips away, washing with it any cares or worries. Listen to the crashing of the ocean waves or the downpour of the rain, smell the wonderful petrichor and allow the peace of other life to resonate with you. Understand that although you live your life at an arms length from nature, you can always come back to her. Always. #pnw #water_captures #forestlife
