I discovered my entomological journal from my childhood in one of the storage rooms, when I have been away on holidays in Russia. Day 1 of the #buildingournest challenge from @wilkinsonnest and #bravegrownspaces challenge from @growingbrave arr both about Learning Spaces! . . Over the years we have "schooled" in many different places. From our schoolroom in the house to our cabin in the woods to our outdoor summer classroom. Learning has happened gathered around the kitchen table, cuddled up on the couch and sprawled out on blankets in the yard. There was even one time when I was on bed rest that my husband brought all the childrens' desks upstairs to our room so that I could teach from my bed. As I think back on all these times and places I can't help but smile had all the wonderful memories we've created no matter where we were. . . So if you're a mom who's just starting out my biggest advice to you would be to worry less about the space and more about what memories you want to create in that space. Day 2 of the #bravegrownspaces challenge from @growingbrave is all about supplies so I thought that I would share our go-to summer learning supplies! . . Learning baskets are a great way to learn on the go and this one was used for a pond study with friends! Some of our must haves are: * Animal Identification Cards * Sibley Backyard Bird Cards * Tree and Flower Identification books * Binoculars and a magnifying glass * Nature journals and a good selection of markers and pencil crayons . . Included in this basket we also have our egg carton scavenger hunt from @the.silvan.reverie and Insect identification cards and poster from @growingbrave. Also our beloved Big Book of Bugs book by @yuvalzommer. . . What are some of your must have learning supplies during the warmer months? I love being able to pick a theme, fill a basket with related books and activities and head out to a spot in nature to dive into our learning! . . I once heard a mother say her children just “weren’t interested in nature.” She said she took them on their first nature walk and they complained the entire time and wanted to go home 10 mins into the trail. I didn’t get the chance to say much to her that day, but it got me thinking... our relationship with nature is similar to any human friendship. • When we first meet someone, the conversation can be a bit forced or dull and there’s a chance we might walk away unimpressed. However, when you build relationship with someone, you get to know their heart. Your understanding and love for them grows and the value you see in them deepens. The same is true with our relationship with nature. • I grew up on a mountain. 14 acres of land in rural San Diego County. I was homeschooled the majority of my school experience and was introduced to nature at a young age. Back then, playing in nature wasn’t a calculated thing at all. My mom just said, “go outside and play” so we did. My friendship with nature grew something in me and changed me in ways I never quite understood until I began homeschooling my own children and introducing them to the same mysteries I observed as a child. • I have noticed something different about my own children though- they’ve grown up in the city and have less experience with nature in raw form. I’ve had to be thoughtful with how I expose them to the outdoors. I’ve had to be intentional with how I share my excitement and relationship with nature. I notice my excitement ignites sparks of interest in their hearts and I see their love for nature grow immensely the more we explore. • As we sit and absorb creation, no time schedule, no pre-planned activities that only occupy the mind with more noise, that is when the true friendship with Earth erupts.
