My first Phenology Wheel! I always say fall is my favorite season but then April comes around and it's just perfect in every way. . Phenology is the tracking of natural events through the seasons. It doesn’t have to be visual — often it is a simple written record. . ON THE BLOG: I added all my favorite nature journal supplies (both for me and the kids), more details on constructing a phenology wheel like this, and some books to inspire. Linked in profile. . I’ll also put some info in my stories about how I constructed this. From inside the circle to outside: for each day I recorded the sunrise and sunset, the actual low and high temps, the weather, the moon phase, and the date. Then, on the outside of the wheel I illustrated things we saw, and wrote more detail for things that wouldn't fit. When we travelled, I recorded the sunrise, temps, weather for that location, not our home. . This picture is titled: “I’m homeschooled and I can’t live without my sisters.” They fight a lot but they pretty much always want to be all up in each other’s space. I don’t talk a lot about curriculum on here (I do that a lot on my blog though), and we don’t really follow a curriculum for the most part- we follow a method (Charlotte Mason). But we just looooove this math curriculum. I was looking for it before i even knew I was looking for it... like this feeling in me that knew it had to exist. Anyways, it’s called The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic series and the first two are available with more to come soon It’s available through @simplycharlottemason. The mastermind behind it (seriously one of the most intelligent ladies I know), @rbaburina, did intensive studying on Charlotte Mason’s method in teaching math and wrote the curriculum based on that study. If you have young kids, you must check it out. Its really like nothing else out there in the math world. And probably the very best thing I’ve learned in this math process is to give your child time to self correct. I can’t tell you how many times Sophie has given me a wrong answer only to say, “Oh wait!” a minute later when setting out to prove the given answer. A sample of my second grader's word family and spelling work. We've been gradually continuing her work with word families this year, moving from exercises in reading practice to memorising spelling rules. This was something I didn't do so well with my eldest and as a result we had to revisit many basic spelling rules when she began to write independently. So much of literacy in the early years in about repeating and reinforcing concepts, and finding new ways to keep it fun and interesting. These last few weeks my second grader has been returning to her main lesson book work and making word family flip books to keep on the coffee table. We've invented some fun games to play with these so she can practice her spelling rules and it's something we can pick up and do in a few minutes here and there throughout the day. The flip books are simple to make, she wrote the words in beeswax crayon, soaked the paper and painted them with liquid watercolour. Once dry we cut out each card, punched a hole in the corner and threaded them onto a key ring. This way more words can be added in the future if she chooses. I love making our own resources like this with my girls, knowing that something we have made together will be used over and again with their younger sisters for years to come.

we watched, weeks ago, as jenny and mr wren scouted our back porch for possible nesting sites. we watched them meticulously carrying mosses, leaf skeletons, and pine straw to their chosen spot. we watched as jenny did 90% of the work and mr. wren sang his heart out in support. then all was quiet for awhile until one day we saw them carry an insect into the nest and two tiny, wide-mouthed heads popped up into view. their cries became louder and we got to know the various sounds of their parents as well. and today, at long last, two darling, fuzzy-headed wrens left their nest and flapped after their parents into the big world. i'm so indescribably thankful these sweets got to be there for the big moment. and i'm just so, so grateful i got to be there to see them see it.
