1760s #CapabilityBrown carried out large-scale improvements to park & pleasure grounds @ Navestock Hall #ChippingOngar #Essex for 3rd Earl Waldegrave. Although park only 150 acres, scale of Brown’s improvements makes this one of his bigger projects. Earl Waldegrave inherited from his brother in 1763 & appears to have called in Brown soon after that. He paid 1st bill in October 1765 & Brown’s account book shows regular payments until July 1773 totaling >£4,500 (c. £7.3). None of Brown’s letters or plans relating to #Navestock survive. Payment in his accounts of £29 7 shs & 3D (£50,300) to 3d Williamson & Co nursery is only clue. Most expensive part of redesign would have been creating new lake, Lady’s Pond, by damming Rivulet (offshoot of River Roding) a major engineering job as stream didn’t run in direction wanted. Moving huge amounts of earth, workmen built large embankment that bordered new lake, with dam at north end. Highway order of 1766 shows removal of public road to #Ongar. The earl bought manor of Bois Hall so he could enlarge estate in that direction, giving wider views from mansion & new area of park, Lady’s Hill. New public road built further east, out of sight of park. Brown designed carriage drive through woodland surrounding park. Where drive crossed small streams, he built 4 wide bridges to carry it. He used existing woodland to form tree belts around edges of park. Embankment next to lake planted with trees, to stabilise it & form backdrop to water. Brown updated pleasure grounds established in 1726, replacing straight lines with curves. Brown’s new layout extended linked up new walled vegetable garden & churchyard & probably ha-ha. Mansion pulled down 1811 but medieval manor house remains & is listed Grade II. Parkland was returned to agricultural use. Estate remains in private ownership. Surviving Brownian features include Lady’s Pond, parts of carriage drive & walled vegetable garden.
