Conventional US troops were being replaced by small units of special operators working alongside Afghan forces. This would be a kinetic mission: track down weapons, intel, and bad guys. • 14 days later, I was standing in AF on a strip of US runway, watching the plane that had brought me here disappear into the clouds, hardly believing my good luck. • 8 of us would get injured. I sign off, close my computer, and look at the time. It’s 2 am in Lima Peru. • The irony of what will turn out to be my last major contribution to Navy SEAL Team 2 is not lost on me. I’ve just written a report that recommends a new approach to the deployment of SEALs as part of the US war on drugs in South America. It will appear in front of Navy command under a name higher up the food chain than mine. And once published, I will no longer have a security clearance high enough to read it. • Being a Navy SEAL is one career that calls on every skill you have, not just the skills you learn in training. In Afghanistan, I carried a gun. Here, my minor in English meant I’d spend more time on a keyboard than in the jungle. In the Teams, if someone had a knack for fixing things, they were on-site mechanics. Storytellers, our stand up comics. Math guys ran the numbers. As long as we had guys who’d grown up hunting and fishing, we could survive anywhere. • I stretch, wondering if it is like this in the civilian world. That your co-workers make you greater than the sum of your parts. My childhood heroes were the men of MACV-SOG. Special Operations elements that conducted cross border recon operations in Vietnam. - Pictured is Bob Howard, a Green Beret that served In SOG and was wounded 14 times over 54 months of combat, put in for the Medal of Honor 3 times, and served with honor and dignity. Here’s an excerpt from one of his citations. - On November 16, 1967, the SOG attacked a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) cache. Howard had killed four soldiers when a machine gun nest opened fire on his team pinning them down. He shot a sniper and then charged the nest, killing its occupants. Another machine gun then began shooting at them. He grabbed a grenade, crawled up to the nest, and destroyed it at point blank range. More firing forced him to retreat enabling another NVA force to retake the machine gun. You need to be able to count on the people around you. You need to know that they’ll do everything in their power to protect you, and put you before themselves in every aspect. You need to know that if you’re hit, they’ll do everything in their power to get you out. And you must be willing to put yourself in harm’s way to protect them. You must hold their safety in a higher regard than your own, and have their backs no matter what. That mutual agreement, that understanding that everyone is always looking out for each other above themselves is what breeds the trust that makes the best fighting units. Knowledge and training are important. Fitness is important. But at the end of the day, it all comes down to trust. Tag someone you’d take into combat. #CombatMedicine
