“I’ve always been a meaningful risk taker. According to Bob Cluett, the founder of the Loran Scholars Foundation, a meaningful risk taker is someone who “gives up personal advantage in order to perform or support a task the world or community badly needs”. For me, the way I’m able to put my mental health first is by remembering that there’s no way I can spread positivity and authentic love in my community if I am not in a place of wellness myself. Consistently reminding myself that my needs must be actualized first in order to support others is what motivates me to be kind to myself. Aside from my philosophical understanding of my mental health, I also have learned to keep track of my regular habits and to recognize when I’m not being my typical self. This means I can recognize I’m falling into a state of mental distress if I haven’t cleaned my room for a while or if I’m sleeping in too much, or even eating less than usual. I recommend using this strategy of differentiating between times of mental distress and mental wellness to everyone. I had a chance to visit the newly- renovated Imperial Hotel in New Hamburg yesterday. I hadn't seen it for almost 10 years and was amazed at the transformation! The hotel dates back to 1872 but by the early 2000's was mostly empty and the structure severely compromised. It's now fully occupied with condos on the top 2 floors and businesses at street-level. The former Waterlot restaurant was originally a home built in the 1840's for Scottish businessman William J. Scott. After Scott moved to New Zealand, the house had a series of prominent owners, and served as a doctors office for 40 years before being converted into a restaurant in the mid-70's.
