As far as research is concerned (because of the amount of research available on it), Rhodiola is likely the most popular adaptogenic herb next to Panax Ginseng.
-
Rhodiola is a perennial flower from Northern Europe and East Asia that, for hundreds of years, has been used to treat depression, anxiety, and mental fatigue, as well as heighten focus during stressful situations. In this case, Vikings from Scandinavia used Rhodiola to improve their performance on the battlefield.
-
Rhodiola raises levels of amines in the brain like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine while preventing their breakdown by inhibiting MAO-a (primarily breaks down tyramine, dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) and MAO-b (primarily breaks down dopamine, benzylamine and phenethylamine). So basically, you have more excitatory neurotransmitters that can work for longer periods of time.
-
The active compounds in Rhodiola have available research to support its use as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, neuroprotectant and antidiabetic (salidroside has shown to alleviate insulin resistance through activation of Sirtuin and AMPK pathways) herb. Make sure your Rhodiola contains a minimum of 3% Rosavins and 1% Salidrosides.

Welcome to Day 7 of the #HackYourMind Series.
Today we talking about the Power of Visualization & how it can help you Heal Your Body.
A study looking at brain patterns in weightlifters found that the patterns activated when a weightlifter lifted hundreds of pounds were similarly activated when they only imagined lifting. In some cases, research has revealed that mental practices are almost effective as true physical practice, and that doing both is more effective than either alone.
So, if athletes can use this technique to enhance performance, how can it enhance the lives of the ‘average Joe’? Studies are highlighting that the strength of the mind-body connection - the link between thoughts and behaviours – is a very important connection for achieving your best life.
As humans, we naturally focus on the past & it is these thoughts that invoke emotions. Thoughts are in the mind and emotions are in the body.
If you wake up every morning and think about the best version of your day or self, those thoughts will invoke emotions linked to that thought & those emotions will change your cell biology.
You can literally heal yourself by changing your thoughts process - by visualising the best version of your day.
Why don’t you try this for 10 days and notice the difference in how you feel & react to situations.
Leave a comment in the section below if you have any doubts, thoughts, or learnings from trying out this process.
Remember, the more we share, the more we all grow.

For starters, these are not the only sleep promoting supplements I recommend nor are they necessarily my favorite (though some of them are. However, I am currently working on some things and can't give away all the good stuff just yet). What this is is a very simplistic stack but can be very potent when dosed correctly. Furthermore, all of the ingredients here can be used fairly consistently without any negative side effects over the long haul (though I don't recommend building dependency to any compounds).
-
Magnesium (this can come from either L-threonate, or bisglycinate) - 2g (140-150mg of active) if threonate. If glycinate, get 400-500mg of elemental. Glycinate is the cheaper option but still effective - magnesium is a cofactor in melatonin production that not only helps synthesize it but helps regulate the right levels of it.
-
B6 (p5p) - 10-50mg (can go as high as 100mg)- p5p is basically the active version of B6. It helps optimize cortisol (aiding in its synthesis and breakdown), making it easier to wake up from sleep. It is also helpful for getting to sleep, as it aids tryptophan in its conversion to serotonin (thus, more serotonin available for melatonin synthesis).
-
Tryptophan - 1-2g - The essential amino acid responsible for synthesizing serotonin. Higher levels of tryptophan and serotonin at night will likely aid in higher levels of melatonin, as serotonin converts to melatonin downstream. I like tryptophan over 5-htp, as many people can't handle 5-htp well and its conversion to serotonin in the brain is poor unless supplemented alongside other ingredients (plus the research advocating it isn't good but if you prefer it, have at it).
-
Glycine - 3-6g - One of the two primary inhibitory neurotransmitters (next to GABA). Glycine neurons are largely classified as interneurons (as interneurons are mostly inhibitory) and found heavily in the spinal cord and CNS.
-
Inositol - 1-2g - Formerly classified as vitamin B8, inositol enhances the effect and efficiency of neuronal communication in the brain (particularly, serotonin signaling), as it anchors signaling proteins to neurons.
Repost @willthewallace with · · · "When an amino acid precursor of serotonin or dopamine is administered alone or in a manner that dominates the synthesis, metabolism, and/or transport of the other system, depletion may occur." (Hinz, Stein & Uncini. 2012)
-
In regards to supplementation, competitive inhibition occurs when dopamine and serotonin amino acid precursors are taken at the same time. This can create a balanced state or an unbalanced one. In an unbalanced state (i.e. more of one neurotransmitter precursor administered in comparison to the other and done over time), dopamine or serotonin will dominate the nondominant neurotransmitter(s) system in metabolism, transport or synthesis (Hinz et al. 2012).
-
As such, dopamine and serotonin precursors (and sulfur-containing amino acids from time to time) should be administered simultaneously and in proper balance to prevent one system from dominating the other (Hinz et al. 2012).
-
Examples of dominant precursors depleting nondominant precursors:
*5-HTP may deplete dopamine.
*l-tryptophan may deplete dopamine.
*l-dopa may deplete serotonin.
*l-dopa may deplete l-tryptophan.
*l-dopa may deplete l-tyrosine.
*l-dopa may deplete sulfur amino acids.
*l-tyrosine may deplete serotonin.
*l-tyrosine may deplete 5-HTP.
*l-tyrosine may deplete sulfur amino acids.
*Sulfur amino acids may deplete dopamine.
*Sulfur amino acids may deplete serotonin.
-
This explanation does not even give detail to the enzyme(s) expression, activity, and interaction that occurs when administering exogenous neurotransmitter precursors. In addition, we're only talking about and taking into consideration two opposing systems here (there are others and different systems interact differently in different parts of the brain).

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take one supplement what would it be Without question mine would be ganoderma! .
The benefits of this amazing herb are so wide reaching! Here is why I would want it if I were stranded on an island .
It balances the stress response (I think being stranded sounds a little stressful) .
It is anti bacterial/viral/fungal (um, drinking funky water) .
It improves mental acuity (you gotta figure our how to get off) .
.
It boosts stamina (climb the tree and get those coconuts) .

I truly believe everything happens for a reason. A little over two weeks ago, I was feeling really tired and like I couldn’t focus. You ever have days where you can’t remember things like you used to, and your brain just feels like it’s in a funk? That was me. Around the same time, I received an email about a collaboration with @bionic.nutrition. I checked out their website, read their reviews, and instantly became intrigued to try out this Ascent cognitive enhancer. I’d never heard of vitamins like this before, but with the natural ingredients that seemed incredible, and all things I’ve previously read to be beneficial, I decided to give it a try. SO HAPPY I DID! This stuff helps me feel more focused and clear-minded throughout the day, especially now that I’ve been working hard at accompanying it with a good diet and daily meditation. If you don’t currently have a morning routine, or if you’re looking to change up your morning routine, here’s what has been working well for me:
.
The FIRST thing I do when I wake up is drink a 20oz glass of water. (And drink another one right after my morning cup of coffee about an hour later!) It helps me wake up almost instantly and feel more energized.
.
The SECOND thing I do is take these Ascent cognitive enhancer vitamins. These help me stay focused throughout my entire work day, no matter what I’m working on. I’ve even noticed more of a steady energy flow, which is AMAZING.
.
Third thing I do is meditate for at least 10 minutes. It helps me clear my mind and focus on my breathing. There are a lot of helpful apps out there for this, but I usually choose one on YouTube. ☺️
.
If you think you have a morning routine that someone could benefit from, share it! I wanna hear what you do to start off a productive day. #bionicnutrition #ad

The next supplement ill review is called curcumin.
Curcumin is used for/as:
Bone and joint health.
cognitive function and brain health.
antioxidant.
anti-inflammation.
Note: the bioavailability of this substance is pretty poor, you will need piperine (from black pepper) to increase the absorption.
What are the findings of the studies:
Reducing:
depression, inflammation, anxiety, osteoarthritis, oxidation, LDL-C, blood glucose, blood pressure, fatigue, cancer risk.
"The curcumin group saw a modestly greater reduction in depression as measured by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, both of which were statistically significant compared with placebo. " "At a dose of 500mg turmeric (22.1mg curcumin) taken thrice a day with meals, turmeric was associated with exerting an anti-inflammatory effect on kidney tissue (shown by reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines) and a reduced systolic blood pressure"
Increasing:
anti-oxidant enzymes, HDL-C, nitric oxide, blood flow, insulin sensitivity, serum BDNF. "80mg of a bioavailability enhanced curcumin supplement has been reported to increase nitric oxide in serum by 40% or so, which is significantly larger than many other dietary supplements.". "Supplementation of curcumin daily for a period of nine months in persons at risk for diabetes is able to prevent any occurrence of diabetes within this time frame (16.4% of control group was diagnosed) while improving insulin sensitivity and adiponectin secretion." ....................................................................... My opinion:
Curcumin has a lot of data behind it showing its benefits. Like ashwaganda it's pretty cheap if bought as powder and it can even be used for the health of your teeth and gum. Therefore it's def. a supplement i keep in stock.
