Often times I hear people say to me, “Yeah I wish I could go and do the things you do... but I have kids.” —— To which I politely reply, “Who do you think was responsible for fostering this passion I have for the outdoors? My parents... when I was a kid....”. Another one that irritates me, “devices are the norm nowadays, every kid has them, that’s what they want to do, we don’t want to deprive our kids.” Try growing up in the 90’s without a television. I think my family was part of the 1% of folks that didn’t have a TV in the US. All of my friends did, and that didn’t matter. My brother and I were far from deprived, and neither of us feel as if we “missed out”. We had little to no money when I was growing up, but my parents took us everywhere. We were throw off docks on boundary waters to “teach us how to swim”. We were given old rods and tackle boxes. We braved tornados in tents, ate hot dogs on a stick and learned about life during long road trips in our old brown conversion van (yes there was carpet on the sides). What I’m saying is maybe if we tried harder to cultivate a love for the outdoors and a desire for life in our children, we wouldn’t be faced with the inability to disconnect and the lack of gratitude. Maybe it won’t change the world, but it’s a step in the right direction.

LOST . I often get this question from so many people, "Where's this place?" or "How do you find such places?". Well, @axitapatel_ and I just wander around the quirky roads off the city and stop over at random places if it looks pleasing to our eyes. . More often than not, we end up finding pretty unique locations to shoot every time. . If you're looking for a good location to shoot and you can't think of one, just move out of your room and wander around, you'll definitely find something incredibly intriguing and unique. #NotAllThoseWhoWanderAreLost . The @tolkienmovie is out today! Who’s excited to see it soon? I won’t be able to see it immediately but I’ve got plans to go with friends before too long! What are your expectations of it? Based on advance reviews, my expectation is that it’s going to be good, but not amazing or super deep. I can’t wait to form my own opinion though! —————————————————— In honor of the movie, here are some recommendations for reading more about Tolkien’s life! Have you read any of these? Any recs you think should be added? • • TOLKIEN, by Humphrey Carpenter. This is the most well-known bio for a reason! It’s definitely the best that I’ve read. It’s thorough and is your best bet to get to know the most wonderful author of all time. • • ON FAIRY STORIES, by J. R. R. Tolkien. This essay lays out some of Tolkien’s essential thoughts on crafting fantasy, and how he saw Christianity reflected in any good story. A must-read for those who want to learn about a topic near and dear to Tolkien’s heart! • • THE LETTERS OF TOLKIEN, selected and edited by Humphrey Carpenter. This is long and can get dense at times, but it’s a great book to deepen your sense of Tolkien’s personality and learn what he thought about quite a lot of things! Toward the end especially there is lots of commentary on LOTR and The Hobbit, as he responds to fan mail. For example, there’s one very in-depth discussion about the history of Hobbit birthday customs. • • TOLKIEN, MAKER OF MIDDLE-EARTH, curated by the Bodleian Library, written by Catherine Mcilwaine. This huge and beautiful book is a perfect intro to Tolkien’s life, art, and creative process. There’s tons of Tolkien’s art and photos of him, and the text gives many helpful snippets of biographical material and discussions on his art and work and even samples of his letters. It’s a pricey book, but everyone should at least grab a copy from the library! It’s beautiful and fascinating to read. • • JOHN RONALD’S DRAGONS, by Caroline McAlister. I’ve fallen in love with picture book bios and this is one of the best. This is a perfect, sweet intro to Tolkien’s life for kids, with hidden dragons in the illustrations!
