☢️| P E T • S C A N |☢️ . . I’m sure most of you guys have heard of a PET scan but probably don’t actually know what the heck it really is....until now! . . PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans are used primarily as an effective way for detecting cancer. Prior to a PET scan, we inject a radio tracer called F-18 FDG (Fluorodeoxyglucose) which is a glucose-analog that gets taken up by cells. . . In tumor cells, there is increased metabolic activity from rapid cell division, which means demand for glucose (energy!) increases as well. Our injected F-18 FDG glucose analog gets taken up by these tumor cells because they think it’s glucose. Since so much of the radiotracer is taken up by cancer cells, it shows up as extremely bright spots on the PET scan. . . The PET scan is then fused with a CT scan which allows us to see exactly where these “bright” areas are. We can then assess if these abnormal areas of increased metabolic activity are actually cancer. . . So what did we learn today! PET scans are an excellent way to detect cancer, cancer metastasis, and/or infection, among many other uses! . . This image won the ‘Image of the Year’ prize at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) meeting this week. It is of a radio tracer that can detect 28 different malignancies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ From the Aunt Minnie report: 'The gallium-68 (Ga-68)-based radiotracer acts as a fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI), which targets the overexpressed proteins present in cancer. The Ga-68 FAPI radiotracer was featured in the June issue of the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. In that paper, lead author Dr. Clemens Kratochwil from University Hospital Heidelberg and colleagues wrote, "Several epidemiologically important tumor entities, in particular breast, esophagus, lung, pancreatic, head-neck, and colorectal cancer, present with a remarkably high uptake in Ga-68 FAPI PET/CT. This may open new applications for noninvasive tumor characterization and staging examinations."' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 'More specifically, the SNMMI Image of the Year for 2019 demonstrates the uptake of the FAPI in 12 epidemiological tumor entities, including high uptake values in lung, breast, prostate, esophageal and pancreatic cancer. EXCITING NEWS!!! At Ascot Equine Vets we can now offer nuclear scintigraphy - commonly know as a ‘bone scan’ as a diagnostic modality! The basic principle of nuclear scintigraphy is the detection of gamma rays, emitted from the decay of a radionuclide injected intravenously into the patient, with a gamma camera. Bone that is stressed or remodelling due to injury will absorb a disproportionate amount of the radionuclide - this will appear as an area of increased uptake or a ‘hot spot’ on the gamma camera. This diagnostic modality will be of huge benefit to us in the work up of some of our lameness cases. We are also happy to accept cases from referring vets!
