How about we started embracing fertility rather than fearing it? This is a pic of my ultrasound with Geordie that flashed up on my Facebook memories today. ❤️ Both of my kids we’re conceive very quickly (first month) and I’m so blessed for this. And please note - I don’t tell you this because I think I’m awesome, I tell you this because it’s important as somebody who is possibly influencing your life choices, that my message is my truth. So for most of us, we spend the majority of our 20’s fearing fertility, our 30’s investigating it and by the time we are in our 40’s we wish we embraced it more or took the time to understand it better. No more fear. ✋ We don’t have to do that anymore. It’s ok to talk about it from a young age. It’s vital to understand it from the get go AND it’s time to welcome it in and not push it away. Your fertility is a gift, not a curse. And fertility is so much more than babies. Fertility is a thriving reproductive system that works without problems. Babies or no babies. If your cycle is problematic, please, let’s sort it out!! ❤️

ʜᴏᴡ ᴛᴏ ʟᴇᴀʀɴ . . . As July 1st approaches new fellows are eager to start their training. As a new fellow, you are going to be bombarded with new information from every angle. You will go from the top of the totem pole as a medicine attending to the bottom as a first year cardiology fellow. The first few months are going to be tough but you’ll make it if you stick to knowing the basics and don’t get bogged down with being advanced, just yet. . . . One of the toughest topics when you start cardiology fellowship is Echocardiography. It is often self taught and fellow driven and you pick up little things a long the way from senior fellows and attendings. The best way to approach echo in the beginning is taking the following steps: . . Learn the views and how to obtain them! . . Learn Doppler and the differences between them (Color, Pulse, Continuous) . . Learn the NORMALS- chamber quantification in particular (i.e what is the normal LA volume index) . . . ⭐️If you learn these three basics you’ll be ready to roll for the first year of fellowship. Some good resources to use are echocardiographer.org, university of Toronto TEE simulator, Kline Echocardiography review, Mayo and ASE board review videos, and the ASE guidelines on Doppler and Chamber Quantification. . . . I seriously used to hate echo...now I seriously love it. It’s such an amazing tool that gives you so much information and can be acquired in a pinch! . . . Good luck to all the new fellows out there! This is our fourth pregnancy, our third ultrasound and our first time getting to see a heartbeat. I started crying the second the doctor called my name because I was so indescribably scared, just walking into that room felt like reliving the trauma of miscarriage. I cried helplessly when she started and thought to myself, after she had been quiet for quite a long time, that there’s no heartbeat this time ether and I should prepare myself for another heartbreak. But then I looked up at her face and saw her smile. My heart dropped as she turned the screen towards us and said “look, here’s your baby”. Still crying like crazy I asked obsessively “is there a heartbeat?” and she smiled at us again and said “yes, look, here you can se the heart beating”. It was the most surreal moment of my life. Like in the movies when time stops and you just stand there paralyzed. We saw our tiny tiny baby, alive, moving around, and we saw the heart beat perfectly.

Personal win: After 12 months of studying a post-graduate ultrasound diploma, I finally have some idea what the black and white lines on the screen actually mean. I've successfully been able to diagnose foreign body obstructions, bladder stones, and a few more. I still have a lot to learn as it's an incredibly complex tool, but I'm happy that so far my skills are being put to good use. Just don't ask me to outline a normal pancreas though, that little bugger is impossible!
