Happy Heavenly Birthday to multi-talented entertainer, Ann Miller (1923-2004) . The native Texan started taking dance lessons as a child and displayed a natural talent for entertaining. After her parents separated, she relocated with her mother to California. Her mother was deaf, making it difficult for her to find employment, so Miller used her talents to support the family by dancing in nightclubs. Although still a child (roughly 13), Miller looked much older than her age which helped her find work. After she and her mother procured a phony birth certificate making it appear she was 18, she landed a film contract with RKO. Proving herself as a masterful musical performer, Miller appeared in films such as “Too Many Girls” (1940), “Easter Parade” (1948), “On the Town” (1948), “Texas Carnival” (1951), and “Kiss Me, Kate” (1953). After her film career slowed in the mid-1950s, she appeared occasionally on television and on stage, including starring in “Mame” on Broadway. In her later years she also gave her insights in several documentaries about old Hollywood and seemed to be as colorful and fun as she had appeared in films . Miller was married and divorced 3 times. Her first marriage was abusive and, after her husband pushed her down a flight of stairs, she prematurely gave birth to her only child, a daughter named Mary, who sadly died just hours later . She and fellow Texan Linda Darnell (1923-1965) were very close friends, as were their mothers. Ann Miller passed away from lung cancer at the age of 80 in 2004. Happy Heavenly Birthday to dancer and actress Cyd Charisse (1922-2008). After a bout of polio left her weakened as a child, she was put into dance lessons to help strengthen her legs. Proving to be a natural dancer, she excelled at ballet and eventually toured several countries as part of a dance company. She was eventually discovered dancing and hired as a dancer for MGM. Throughout her career, she danced alongside legends Fred Astaire (1899-1987) and Gene Kelly (1912-1996), as well as appeared in the likes of “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952), “The Band Wagon” (1953), “Brigadoon” (1954), “It’s Always Fair Weather” (1955), “Meet Me in Las Vegas” (1958), and “Silk Stockings” (1957). Her career slowed in the 1960s, but she acted on occasion until the late 1980s. Charisse was married twice, her second marriage to actor/singer Tony Martin (1913-2012) lasting 60 years until her death. She had two sons, Nicky Charisse (1942- ) and Tony Martin Jr. (1950-2011). Her family experienced a terrible tragedy when the wife of her oldest son was sadly killed in a 1979 plane crash .
