Osibisa / Osibisa / LP / 1971 / MCA Records / UK // I've been enjoying these "criss-cross rhythms that explode with happiness" on this sunny day. Although I'm really liking this album, I have a creeping sense of cynicism, so I'd be interested to know what others think. Afrobeat and funk aren't genres I'm well versed in, but I'm assuming this to be a somewhat watered-down offering. Several little things point to this being an attempt at mainstream the sound for a white, prog-rock audience: the band seems to have been moulded by the label; the music is produced by Tony Visconti and pushes into proggy territory; and the (albeit brilliant) cover is by famed Yes artist Roger Dean. I note that Art Garfunkel covered one of these tracks on his debut solo album the following year, so the strategy seems to have worked. Like I said, I'm really enjoying this record and the poppier sounds, but curious as to how it is regarded within the genre.
