A ‘prehistoric massacre’ uncovered at an archaeological site called #Naturak on the southwest shore of Lake Turkana in Kenya, 2012. — Twenty-seven (27) sets of remains dating between 10,500-9,500 years old (suggesting they belonged to a hunter-gatherer group) were recovered from the shore, twelve of which were ‘relatively complete,’ as well as fifteen partial skeletons. The remains were of men, women, and children. — There was no sign of intentional burial, as the remains were found scattered. Of these scattered remains, all revealed indisputable evidence of violent trauma. Some showed evidence of blunt force trauma to the skull and patellae (likely caused by a club), while others suffered from sharp force injuries to the skull and cervical vertebrae, caused by the arrowheads and spearpoints found embedded in the remains. — Image #1 and #2 shows the remains of young men discovered with signs of blunt force trauma to the skull. Image #3 shows the position in which a pregnant woman was found. She suffered from blunt force trauma to the skull, and the positioning of her hands and feet suggest that she may have been bound prior to her death. The fetus (~6-9 months gestation) was found still in her abdomen. — This may be the earliest evidence of intergroup violence in a foraging society. Philosophers have long debated the emergence of intergroup violence. Some believe organized warfare began as a direct result of complex society with political hierarchies. Others believe it began after the agricultural revolution. The argument is that once prehistoric peoples had accumulated enough resources, they had something to fight over. — However, if either of these theories are true, this makes violence on this level basically unknown to hunter-gatherers who lacked both an amassment of resources and organized society. It is clear based on the evidence found that one group of hunter-gatherers appear to have attacked the other. To explain the unusual occurrence for this time period, researchers have begun to theorize that these two groups were likely more settled and larger than other hunter-gatherer groups at that time. The two groups were likely living in close quarters.

Two human skulls uncovered in Mixtec-Aztec, Mexico. (1325-1521 CE) — Decorated with a #turquoise, polychromic mosaic, these individuals are said to have been buried very shortly after death as the #ossicles (ear bones) were discovered still intact.

The Lovers of Valdaro; San Giorgio, Mantua, Italy. — These #Neolithic lovers were uncovered in 2007 intertwined in a “lovers embrace.” This position is quite unusual for neolithic burials, as are double burials. Dated to be 6,000-years-old, it is unclear if the two climbed in together or were positioned this way after death. The two are estimated to have been about 20-years-old at their time of death. — An #arrowhead was found positioned beside the cervical vertebrae of the male, while a blade was found positioned by the femur of the female. No evidence of trauma or microtrauma was found on either set of remains, leaving archaeologists to believe that these items were buried alongside these two intentionally. — The nature of this archaeological find has lead many individuals to label these lovers as the “Neolithic Romeo and Juliet.” According to #Shakespeare’s play, Romeo is exiled to #Mantua, a coincidence that only fuels this imaginative story. Another coincidence earning them this title is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, depicting a story similar to Shakespeare’s about star-crossed lovers. It too was set in Mantua. However, the head of the excavation has stated that as of now, there has been no evidence to support that these two aided in their own deaths.
