We've seen too many irreplaceable vintage synths damaged in shipping - not when shipping but when receiving - thanks to poor packing jobs done by various professionals, including those working at quite a few UPS stores. The UPS Store has a "pack and ship promise", which means that if or I should say WHEN the item gets damaged due to poor packing and typical rough handling, they will pay for damages or refund your money (though the process will be a PITA). We deal in precious classic instruments. We don't want irreversible damages paid for, we don't want damage to happen in the first place! So when we buy items from people that need to be packed and shipped to us and the seller cant pack them to our specs, we interview UPS stores in their area. It's crazy how hard it is to find stores who actually read our requirements, have the STANDARD packing materials we ask them to use, and seem competent as well as reasonably priced. To make matters worse, it seems UPS stores are switching over to a type of bubble wrap that appears to us to be completely useless garbage. Our brief, non-scientific tests suggest that this new type of wrap, which is filled with air at the store, would be completely ineffective when packages are dropped on their corners, since the air gets temporarily squeezed out of the bubbles at the point of impact, even with multiple layers. Hear that knocking sound in the video? That's the sound of knuckles pushing the air out and hitting the table. It appears as though the UPS Store is now instructing their franchise owners to use this stuff. I fear this will result in even more smashed vintage synths. Referring to both vulnerability and impermanence, Suzanne Jongmans’ investigates the texture and feel of both the present and past. Since 2007 she has been working on the series ‘foam sculptures’: caps and collars, inspired by 16th and 17th century Flemish and Dutch “Golden Age” paintings, made from materials currently used for packaging and insulation (cheap material which is often discarded after use). By using these materials Jongmans makes a reference to consumerism and the rapid circulation of materials. Jongman transforms old costumes into new plastics and old masters into new photographic works.
