Introducing visceral osteopathy to mark World Digestive Health Day
.
Osteopaths are mostly known for treating musculoskeletal pain, particularly lower back or joint pain. .
However, the osteopathic philosophy is to aid the body’s own innate healing mechanism. Osteopathy improves the functions of blood flow, the drainage of body fluids, like lymph, and innervation. This philosophy applies not only to muscles and joints, but also to the body’s organs, known as the viscera. .
For this reason, you may find your osteopath asking to assess and treat your tummy.
.
Treatment may include techniques which aim to improve movement though the colon by working directly on the abdomen, helping to reduce restricted parts of the intestine, muscles, and ligaments that may be impeding blood and lymph flow to the viscera. Techniques may also aim to improve innervation to the viscera by working specifically on spine.
.
Although still limited, recent research has pointed out how touching the abdomen could stimulate the production of serotonin and our endocannabinoid system. These molecules are involved respectively in improving mood and reducing pain.

Everywhere you look, someone’s got an opinion about what you should be doing with your life. It can be completely paralyzing and if you’re not careful, you’ll wake up one morning wondering how you ended up where you are...because it doesn’t feel right...and your body is almost aching for something more/different.
.
But here’s something comforting:
Your body always knows what is true and best for you. You can literally feel it. Those inexplicable intuitive hits, gut feelings, hunches, red flags...your body is always trying to guide you and help you make decisions. It’s like your own personal internal GPS.
.
If you’re like me though, you may have spent a lifetime ignoring your intuition, shutting it down, and devaluing it...always placing the value on external authorities.
.
And when we don’t listen, those intuitive messages get louder and manifest themselves physically (TMJ, digestive issues, herniated discs anyone?) until we’re forced to pause, attend to ourselves, and recalculate that internal GPS.
.
It took two hip surgeries, a back surgery, countless mysterious allergies, and a lot of anxiety for me to finally wake up and start listening to my body. It changed everything.
.
Not sure where to start? If you’re looking for support, I am here. Find out how to work with me (link in bio)
.
Here’s a simple way to begin opening up a dialogue with your body and your intuition:
Take a moment and thank your body for all it does for you.
Try taking five, deep low-belly breaths, imagining that with each inhale you’re sending a little thank you note down into your body.
Then, ask your body if it has anything to share with you right now...and just listen.
...If nothing comes, that’s okay! Keep opening that internal dialogue.
I think patients feel like this when they are waiting a long time for their doctor . We try our hardest to see patients on time and not get behind . The reality is that sometimes us docs do get behind .. we get emergency calls, patient emergencies, lots notes to right , ORs running late, and sometimes you just need to spend more time with a particular patient who’s having a bad day . So have some understanding, we are trying to deal with the health system just like everyone else, and docs like me try our best to give everyone all the time they need. #medicine #stemcelltherapy #painmanagement #spine #dallasdoctors #healthcare
FOLLOW-UP • I have officially been home from the hospital for a week, which means I also saw my internist today (hospital policy). It was good to check in after such an intense medical “event.” We talked about my labs, my super low BP, doctors I need to make a part of my team permanently, my nutrition and my emotional wellbeing. I’m going to continue seeing the vascular neurologist who saw me in the hospital. I have to stop seeing my neurologist, so she’s going to try to get me in sooner with the new neurologist—whom I made an appt with well before any of this happened a few months ago—given what has happened, rather than waiting until July 10th. If she can’t, I’ll have to pay cash to see my current neurologist if anything happens, but I’m hoping she’s successful.

TW: nutrition/weight discussion ⚠️ I lost some weight in the hospital, which was being monitored in the hospital. I’m really underweight now, so I’m focusing on eating as much as I can, but my doctor is concerned about my meds not working well, which is why I’ve been awake until almost 3am the past week or so. My nutrition markers were all low, so she repeated them. If necessary, I’ll reach out to the dietitian again.
-
Finally, we talked about my emotional well-being. I told her that I’m struggling a bit, but doing better than I thought I would. She was thrilled to hear that I had a therapist on board already.
-
It was a really helpful, very long appt. I’m so grateful for her and her willingness to squeeze me in and not just see me for 5 minutes bc she double-booked me; she still spent 35 minutes with me.
Happy Friday ❤️✨ Never stop planting those seeds #healthiswealth

Growing up, I used to be totally turned off, judgey, and almost repulsed when I’d see someone being vulnerable (for example, when I’d see someone asking for help, expressing deep emotion, allowing themselves to be cared for, etc). It would make me so uncomfortable, like I wanted to crawl out of my own skin. It was a strong reaction and each time I felt it, I’d vow to myself always to stay in control and keep a tight lid on everything.
.
Now of course, it’s obvious to me that I myself was terrified to be vulnerable, express my own emotions, and of being rejected.
.
Now I know that triggered feeling was a signal...an invitation to gently reach out and tend to those rejected parts of myself.
.
TIP: One thing that helped me get in touch with myself and dig beneath those triggers was journaling. Writing down the instances where you judge others or try to control the experience of others can open your eyes to some major patterns and development opportunities in your own relationship with yourself.
Whether it’s a job, a relationship, friendship, coping mechanism of any kind...we can grow out of things. When you feel that safety start to stagnate, when it begins to hold you back instead of supporting your growth, this is when it’s time to make a change and try something new...even if it’s small.
.
Because the comfort zone is not a destination. It’s a space to rest and build up the energy and courage to move on to the next level.
.
There is more out there for you.
