The picture shows 3 members of the Greek resistance during the Second World War. - Greek Resistance. (WW2) - There were many Greek resistance groups stationed in Greece. However, they had only played a small part of the whole campaign of eastern Mediterranean and the Balkan in World War 2. But they had played a big part in helping Greece from the Germans and the Italian fascists. - The two main resistance groups in Axis occupied Greece were the communist EAM (National Liberation Front) with its army the ELAS (Greek People's Liberation Army) and the EDES, the Greek Democratic National Army. Two of these groups usually didn't go along well together because of their politics but they had the same intention which was to fight the occupying armies of Greece. To make the work of these groups effective, the SOE (Special Operations Executive) had to intervene. And SOE's intervention in the Greek resistance groups started to occur in early 1942. - In October of 1942, the British was in the final stages of planning a big offensive in Egypt and they wanted to reduce the flow of equipment to the Afrika Korps in North Africa. And in this case, the SOE needed the two groups, the EDES and ELAS to work together and sent operatives to Greece. It was a success as the EDES and ELAS blew up an important bridge on the Thessaloniki to Athens rail line where the great amount of Afrika Korps' equipments were transported. However, the relationship between these two groups didn't last long and they started attacking each other again. In the summer of 1943, the ELAS/EAM made an agreement with the British as they would stop attacking the EDES but the British had to return them financial and military supports. And good thing for the Allies, that the false intelligence was spread to the Germans that Allied landing was going to occur in Greece but it was actually occur in Sicily, Italy, making the Germans moved a whole Panzer division to Greece and left Sicily less guarded. Later in the war, ELAS once again started to attack another resistance groups and defeated all of them except the EDES.

Partisan units often worked behind enemy lines, and wrecked havoc to enemy territory. This meant the enemy had to divert front-line units for mopping up their territory, reducing the strength of front-line battle units. As they were rarely supplied, they had to gather equipment themselves, often from enemy corpses or from fallen aircraft. On the right, you can see a partisan wearing a Zeltbahn camouflage poncho.
