We lost another great musical icon this past week with the passing of the powerfully voiced James Ingram. There have already been many well-deserved tributes to the man over the past week, highlighting his various accolades, Grammys, and chart topping hits in a much more eloquent and comprehensive fashion than I can offer. What I can say is that his voice was ubiquitous in my early childhood, thanks to his hits always being featured on Smooth Grooves and Body and Soul R&B compilation TV commercials. I wasn’t yet ready to appreciate the nuance of most R&B at that age but I damn sure knew those 5 seconds of “Just Once” and “Baby Come To Me”. . As my tastes became more refined I later came to appreciate his rich, deep vocal delivery and introspective songwriting, with a notable favorite being “The Secret Garden”, a dream team collaboration with Quincy Jones, Al B. Sure, Barry White and El Debarge. One of my fondest memories of James came with his cover of the Michael Jackson and Siedah Garrett ballad “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, this time a duet with Gloria Estefan. It was one of those rare occasions where someone covered an already iconic track but made it his or her own. I remember thinking “Damn, he merced it”. That was James in a nutshell to me: he was like the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson of R&B duets and collabos; you put Ingram on your record and you know you had a hit on your hands.
