It’s full body tactile and proprioceptive input; it’s calming, organizing, and easily adjusted to fit a child’s preferences or needs. You can easily increase or decrease the amount of pressure you’re pushing through the ball, do only certain portions of the body, and do with the child lying face up or face down (or both!). I usually do 10 reps then ask if he/she wants more or is all done. Try it when a child is “everywhere” for some calming input or is sensory defensive and needs increased input for integration. Fun hand-eye (or eye-hand) coordination game. Plastic wiffle ball tied to some string; can also tie the string to something but I usually just hold it... on the first one, I am telling her when to catch it so she has to watch it and be ready; if she just catches it, it’s a lot easier because she can catch it on the first swing (which is what they all try to do if I don’t play this way). The second one, where she is hitting it back and forth, I told her to switch hands back and forth (to work on some bilateral integration). Give a COTA an alligator dart shooter and it turns into an alligator theme for the week. These gator clips are from Dollar Tree and the wooden box is from a Melissa & Doug toy. My alligators are ready for a snack! Happy Occupational Therapy Month! To my fellow OTs, COTAs, OTS...keep empowering and inspiring others to live their best life that is meaningful to them and helping them to accomplish their goals to be the best they can be. With any occupation or career, there are challenges (believe me I know especially this season for me) but at the end of the day just remember to be the best OT God created you to be! There will be doubts (I still have them after being an OT for almost 13 years )but just remind yourself you have that professional background you went to school for and with every struggle & failure, there is always growth & lessons that come with it. I’m still learning every day and I have to thank my fellow OT colleagues and OT community who has helped me along the way! So go out there and be the best OT you can be because someone needs you!
