PAINTING in EXHIBITION I have always been fascinated how the straight lines of modern architecture become curved and distorted when reflected into adjacent buildings. This painting depicts an urban scene from Toronto’s financial district. “Urban Perspective” is not only a throwback to my previous finance employment as Corporate Treasurer at Manitoba Hydro, but also to my youthful days studying vanishing point perspectives as a student in the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture. This video shows the making of the painting. _ The painting was based on reference photos that I took in 2009 while on a work related trip to Toronto. Does anyone recognize the 3 buildings in this scene or the street corner vantage point? _ In 2016, upon a return to painting after a 31 year hiatus from my artwork, I began the painstaking process of hand-drafting an architectural rendering onto the 40” x 16” canvas. A key step was accurately determining the 3 vanishing points for the piece. In the end, I had to place my canvas on my basement floor in order to render the drawing as it turned out that the vertical vanishing point was ~ 8' above the piece, while the left point was ~ 6' away and the right point was ~ 12' away). I then used tension strings from these 3 points to align the perspectives and ink the rendering. _ Once the drawing was complete, I then applied hundreds of layers of acrylic glazes to paint the building facades and to create the reflections and shadows. The final stage was to paint some tree tops (Toronto maple leafs?) in the shadowy foreground of the piece to not only reinforce that the buildings were rising high above street level, but also to act as an organic counterpoint to the stark steel and glass elements of modern architecture. _ “Urban Perspective” was completed in September 2017, and later that year was accepted into the Manitoba Society of Artists 2017 Open Juried Competition and Exhibition. This painting is included in the “Springtime on Albert Street” art exhibition on May 15 - June 8, 2019 at Fleet Galleries (which will also feature the beautiful work of Canadian artist @dougcrookart). My new painting “Watering Hole” depicts a toy scene that could never occur in nature—predator and prey animals coexisting in harmony around one watering hole. This painting was inspired by Cai Guo-Qiang’s 2013 installation “Heritage” and Jan Brueghel’s ‘paradise paintings.’ This work and others examine the false representations of “wild” in the home and the overly optimistic and fictitious narratives that occur in play.
