Im getting hooked up for #8 chemotherapy treatment today! Just waiting for my bloodwork to come back to begin my four chemo’s. I’m excited for several reasons today, first being my port is working(!!!), as it’s designed, so I only had to get poked once! Secondly... shit. I forget. It will come back to me, maybe. #chemobrain. In other good news, I’m feeling GOOD with a few lifestyle tweaks I’ve made in the past couple of weeks and I’ll write about it more detail next week when I get my brain back. Hints: includes food and self care and self love. Ah, I remember now. Secondly, this should be my last time receiving bleomycin (B) chemo , the more toxic of the four I receive. I get another PET/CT on the first and if I’m in remission this time, THEN I get to drop it and continue with just AVD, (3 different chemos) for my *last* four treatments. So I’m feeling pretty good! And it’s a beautiful day in San Fran. Side note, I made this odd quick breakfast concoction that I freakin loved! Neste exame a pessoa recebe uma aplicação de glicose (um tipo de açúcar) marcada com o FDG, na veia. O FDG é uma substância que contém uma dose baixíssima de radiação, no entanto a máquina do PET é capaz de detectar mesmo essas baixas quantidades. Nós sabemos que o câncer tem uma atividade metabólica aumentada, ele consome mais nutrientes que o restante das células normais, por isso cresce e forma os tumores no corpo. Logo, quando a glicose com FDG é injetada na veia, rapidamente as células cancerígenas começam a consumi-lo. O aparelho então identifica onde está acontecendo este consumo de açúcar, gerando uma imagem destes locais do corpo. No mesmo momento a máquina do PET/CT realiza uma tomografia computadorizada, um exame capaz de gerar imagens do corpo extremamente precisas. As imagens são feitas usando raios X, como os das radiografias. Porém a máquina de tomografia é capaz de produzir imagens como se estivéssemos cortando o corpo e olhando por dentro. O exame de PET/CT junta essas duas imagens, a imagem precisa do corpo humano (da tomografia) e a imagem de onde está acontecendo o consumo de glicose (do PET). Isto mostra com precisão onde estão os tumores e pode ajudar o tratamento oncológico de várias maneiras. Açucar não “alimenta” o câncer.
